[glow=red,2,300]The absurd flamewars here have got even more rediculous of late with good folk falling as casualties on either side of the debate.
I thought I'd put across some points to provide some perspective.
Fistly I have been on several message boards where the pro pendragon sentiment is massively the majority. I have also been on forums with the diametric opposite view. These are not biased or heavilly moderated forums. This might be a statistical anomaly but regardless its important to know that not everyone is in some sort of consensus.
On people who feel 'betrayed' by Pendragons publicity claims. In the words of Public Enemy
"Don't d, d, dont believe the hype"
I mean really? From the beginning most people understood that Pendragon were a small time operation working with a small-medium size budget and the quality of their product would surely be unpredictable. If you took in Hines claims 'hook, line and sinker' and got upset when the trailer wasn't 100% hollywood blockbuster....
Maybe you should reconsider if you should vote next election. Definatly don't watch tv.. you might find that claims on advertising might be exaggerated too! I mean really, all Hines has done is put out the stock standard media hype, nothing more, nothing less. Every Director goes on about his film as if its the greatest film on earth no matter whether it turns out to be an academy award winner or complete roast turkey.
So... now we have got some degree of measure of the film should we support it or not?
Star Trek The Motion Picture was expensive.. and almost universally dissapointing.. Still fans flocked to the film in droves. Was it just loyalty? Nope, there was a deliberate campain to make the film financially successful so that it would get a sequal, hopefully a better one. They got what they wanted.
Sure we might not want a sequal but we do presumably want more WotW products and if we want them based even remotely on the book then supporting Pendragons film would help. For example, if the BBC sees there is a market in an accurate version of WOTW and they believe they can do better than Pendragon then the possibility of a BBC mini-series increases.
On the other tentacle, if the film sinks, then it sinks. It might damage the chances of another accurate version being made in the near future, especially if it fails with the fan community but then it might not.
However the big problem with the anti comments is amply demonstrated by the analogy I mentioned in another thread to the child in Woolworths who wanted a lemon lollypop when only raspberry was available. He stamped his foot and cried. Nothing he could do would get him a lemon lollypop. Something did result from his actions of course, an aweful lot of people got annoyed at hearing his endless tantrum. End result? A small child got his bottom smacked by his mother and several people moved to other parts of the store to get away from it all or left the store alltogether.
This is very apt. We have seen people flee this part of the boards, some have left this and other boards alltogether and some naughty children who couldn't behave have been smacked. I have seen flamewars kill entire forums (The Robotech Page's forum was one.. the vitriole spilled onto three other forums following it too) so while I know that moderation (like policing) is not popular, it clearly is neccessary.
Besides, those not satisfied with Paramount or Pendragon still have Jeff Wayne's work to look forward to so there is no excuses left. Anyone who cannot be satisfied with either:
a) low-budget to-the-book version even if it might have bad acting/effects etc
b) Big Budget version with everything the Pendragon film might be lacking... and lacking much of what makes the book the book
C) CGI version of one of the most popular albums ever containing a good deal of both above advantages and disadvantages.
..really needs to learn to cope with unrealistic expectations.. and might want to go see a counsellor about that.
If you don't like something on tv... you turn to another channel. Don't like this WotW film? Go watch another.
As a number of people who are looking forward to this film have left this part of the forum because they feel unable to discuss it without being shouted down by all the complaints then I must ask... what is to be gained by it? Both sides have mentioned sockpuppets or viral marketting.... I hope that no-one on this board is guilty of that and if they are.. they'll be banned. Other than that there seems to be nothing that can now be gained by constant anti-hines diatribes. The film is pretty much finished, the excuse of constructive critisism no longer applies. The die is cast. The store only has raspberry lollypops.
Personally I believe there will be something to each project to make it worth watching/owning.
If you however have given up on Pendragon... then why are you even in this section reading this? Go to the other movie parts of the board and talk about the films you will appreciate, have fun and enjoy yourselves. And kindly be polite enough to leave this section to people who are looking forward to this film.
