Here we go then, figured you might be interested in seeing how i go about building (and most probably balls up) a Tripod as i do it. Pretty sure i'll be needing input/advice/verdicts on a lot of this so any comments would be appreciated. This is the basis - a UFO table lamp that, with its three legs and shield-like body, just screams Fighting Machine to me. The shield is about 15 inches across and i intend for it to be about 4 feet tall when done. The dome at the top is going to be vcut back to make the hood and there'll be a Martian in there. Off to the shops for metal tubing for the legs so expect an update soon.

BBC News 24 Update
"News has come in of a alien invasion upon the Earth. Towering tripods armed with Heat Rays have landed in England, but there are no worries of mass destruction as the Martians forget to bring an electric extension lead with them so they can only travel in a 2 foot radius"

Bugger - the secret power source is revealed... Back from the shops with three gauges of metal tube which together will make the legs. I'm leaving it at that, bar some panels on them, as Wells had it that the Martians didn't use fixed pivots so no joins neccesary. Besides, i MUCH prefer the idea of them bowling along rather than a "man on crutches".

Yeah, if you get in its way while it's off to the post office for its pension, you'll get fried!

Bit of progress. Here's the dome cut back to become the hood. I was a bit worried as the thing is going to be 3 feet rather than 4. That's because i don't think the metal tube legs will take the weight if it's another foot higher. The worry is that, at 3 foot tall, it works out roughly as 1/35th which would make the Martian in the hood far too big. But then i got to page 54 and "... with a mighty great head in a hood sir" so figure, if the heads so big it fills the hood, the scale won't be too off. At this point can i ask a question? Any thoughts - or images you can direct me to - of what the Heat Ray looks like. Know somewhere there's mention of a box with a funnel but can't find it.

Aye. BTW Max, when you're done making it, why not send pics to StarshipModeler's Readers' Gallery (phwoar!)? www.starshipmodeler.com/It'll make a change from the endless bloody Trek models clogging up the site... And the same goes for your earlier Martian and Fighting Machine - and anyone else who's made models too!

[glow=red,2,300]Nifty! Are you going to put the heatray on a dedicated jointed arm or held in a tentacle? [/glow]

See, this is why i'm building it and posting at the same time - to get input as i go. Short answer is, dunno. The book has "A kind of arm carried a complicated metallic case" so i guess it holding the heat ray in a tentacle is out. The question is, what does a kind of arm look like?

Could be...
A kind of arm carried a complicated metallic case, about which green flashes scintillated, and out of the funnel of this there smote the Heat-Ray.
On the other hand, 'arm' could also mean a tentacle, after all, squid and octopus tentacles are also referred to as 'arms'.
It's horses for courses.

i'm building a horsell common scene using bits of my brothers warhammer army. Any ideas about the cylinder!

Hmmm, depends how accurate you want to be - a cylinder 90 feet across at 25mm scale is gonna be about 2 feet across!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Well i was gonna put only the top of the cylinder sticking up outa the pit with tentacles coming out from it!

I was thinking of making a little crashed cylinder scene and use one of my daughters empty Sudocream tubs as it's got a nice detailed lid along with a threaded top. Trouble is, even if i use the large £4.95 size, the scale is still gonna be smaller than 00 or N gauge, meaning getting figures to match is right out.

Im sorry, I can't allow you to do that, 'Im' copyrighted ;D H.G describes the cylinder as looking like a 'rusty gas float'. You could easily do something on a budget, a jar with a screw off lid, then paint it black inside the container and lid, paint the outisde your gun metal colour, put a small bulb inside witha green tint cover that when you unscrew the lid, the greenish hue of light filters out.
