Halfords tend to stock gloss finish metallic type paints. I think you'd be better looking for spray enamel paints from a DIY or model shop.

Hey ho, after finally choosing the right colour and waiting for the ultra-rare rain to go, here we go with an update. This is the beastie now sprayed with the top coat and with the legs slotted on. Still don't know what to do with the knees right now so i'm ignoring them. The arm jutting out on the left is for the Heat Ray, which you can see on the ground alongside the tentacles. Next step is to pick out the panel lines and greeblies and then a bit of weathering with pastels.

And here you go with a close-up of the hood. Got to sculpt a Martian to sit in there, which is the part i'm looking forward to the most:

Bloody blimey, that looks great. Can't wait to see this one finished. Looks like it's got a nice 50's feel to it already, which in my books is a great thing!

Ok, i've started picking out the panel lines and this is what it looks like. On the one hand i think she's too bright still but on the other it is aluminium as in the book and i'm thinking i can use lighting effects on it. I could dirty it down with an airbrush but i don't want it too grubby and battle worn. Any thoughts?

Personally I would opt for a bit of weathering on the model, takes that "new" look away. Excellant model by the way

Looks fine to me. It's an amazing model... can't wait to see it finished. I do agree that A little weathering might add a little bit of 'personality' to it - make it look as if it's been in battle. But it looks good without weathering too.

Well, last nights Dr Who made my mind up for me - decided to go with the brushed steel effect of the new Cybermen. So, out into the garden this morning and a light dusting of Games Workshop Boltgun Metal (the model, not me):
