This may have been covered in previous posts before my time,so sorry if I'm covering old ground, but I've always wondered... In the JW versions in the hoods of the machines there are two distinct 'eyes'... mostly green but some blue. When I was smaller than I am today,I thought they were indeed eyes,.but obviously this would mean that the Martians must be way 'bigger than a bear'.So maybe, I thought, there could be two martians sitting within the hood...sort of a Fighting Machine built for two (or maybe one is taking driving lessons.'' At the next Human settlement,I would like you to bring the machine smoothly to a stop,Overlord'')but that can't be right. Then I considered that perhaps the 'eyes' are in fact the 'visor' HGW mentions some of the machines having.Thinking on this though I remembered the birds pecking at one of these 'eyes' in the artwork for the album. Not a visor then, I think. I'm kind of the mind now that perhaps they were designed like that for the effect...certainly makes the machines look more like an organism rather than metal.. perhaps a sort of 'shock and awe' type of thing. So, I've gone for an effective artistic license. Any thoughts?

I think that you're trying to say that the FM's could be overall suits. Like a sort of Cyborg Technology or are you trying to say something different. Well, the JW Tripods on the Dead London Picture look pretty much organic and you could be right. You're asking questions wich I always wanted to ask myself, looks like all the WOTW-Fans are pretty much the same thinkers. Tripod

Yeah, we're all the same inside,Tripod.Mostly red and squishy. i guess though,if you like something enough,it's bound to fire up the imagination. That's what's so great about stories like WotW.Also that's what's so great about forums like this.Excellent for kicking your thoughts and ideas around with like minded peeps. I meant that I always thought that the machines were almost like a body with the Martians as the 'brain' sitting within. So,yes kind of cyborgs or vaguely like the Borg or some such.It was the green twin globes at the front that gave me an impression of eyes..Obviously, this flies in the face of what I know because of the book. But I like the concept anyway.

[glow=red,2,300]The JW machine always reminded me of a mosquito with those big eyes... I suppose they had to have some impressive way of showing the birds ripping ragged shreds of flesh from the hood, and as Ravens and crows tend to peck out the eyes of wounded and dying animals it must have been a natural(ly nasty) idea. The JW machine doesn't work on many counts, even to some of the descriptions in the musical let alone the book, but it is still cool. [/glow]

Yes, Bayne, they do look like mosquitos, or insectoid at least...the Heat Ray funnel looks like a proboscis, they have the big compound-type eyes, the metal bodies look segmented, the spindly legs.Robo-mozzies! It's certainly a hard image to shake off as I said earlier,I guess the tentacles must be inside pulling levers or something.Maybe JW wanted to streamline the whole thing too..hence no metal or Martian tentacles dangling from the machine. Thinking back though,I'm sure that quite a while back I saw a pic of a JW style machine but with a wide window at the front. Not sure where I saw that though. The Handling Machines certainly look like they can do the jobs they have to do.Plus they look insectoid, or beetle-like at any rate

Hi nerfherder, two martians in the hood of a Fighting Machine for driving lessons can´t be right. I agree with you in that topic, BUT the idea is very funny to me !! That would be great stuff for Baynes comics ! Perhaps new adventures of the Supreme Martian Overlord as a driving teacher.................. ;D Before I get too silly here - the eyes of the Fighting Machine seem to me biological too. Maybe the walker is a mixture between mechanic and biology with some kind of organic metal ? Just an idea..............

And a beard,B-B.Driving instructors ALWAYS have beards.
Yeah, Kell, that sounds about right. It could be some form of bio-metallic technology, who knows? I think also that rather than having levers and such, the Martians could 'plug in' directly to the machine and control it telepathically. The 'eyes' could be a kind of organic visor, not part of the martian but organic anyway. Damn, the whole idea of this thread was to answer my questions but it's only got me thinking more!Ah well. It's fun to speculate.

I always wondered about the Dead London image. It shows that the Eyes are in fact biological. Made of flesh. But are they the eyes of the actual Martian inside? I've spend a lot of time wondering about this above the Jeff Wayne booklet. I think that Jeff Wayne, and the artists took some artistic freedom and that's the reason for this debate.
Greetinga, Johan

Yep,Thunders, that's what got me thinking. If they were the eyes then the Martians would be ENORMOUS! I go for the artistic license thing too.

In the PC game one can see for a second or two the view from inside of the hood of a Fighting Machine. The eyes look really like an organic visor ! I like the idea of the "plug-in" possibility very much ! That gives the Martian technology a more advanced touch !
Nocturnal greetings ! Kell ( Iihhh, my driving instructor has tentacles !!!! ) ;D

The telepathic control thing makes more sense to me too.Imagine learning to drive with your mind though! Or a fighting machine with a big 'L' on the back.Or a machine starting up then stalled by a new pupil.Or wrapped round a tree.I got to stop thinking about this.

I see it more as a kind of "Membrane" like a protective sheet. Looking closely at the "Dead London" artwork,it does imo look like a "Honeycombed" cell structure that acts(obviously)as a windscreen for the Martians. If those are the Martians eyes then they,ve either got bad conjuntivitus or someone has goosed them from behind. Also note the lack of windscreen wipers. B-B.

Actually looking at the "Thunderchild" artwork,im sure that fighting machine is crosseyed or has just been shown a photo of his mum in the nude. Or the incredible Hulk is stickng his behind out the front window. B-B.
