One thing you have to take into consideration on the JW tripods is that they are grossley over scaled. The machine in scaled with the ironclad would make the tripod some 200ft tall. I would agree that the green eyes are nothing more than a shield that the martian sits behind controlling the machine. Looking at the artwork I dont think it would have looked right if the hood had the steel tenticle hanging from it like Wells describes, but you can see one small tenticle just beneath the hood.

How would the Thunder child be able to fire upon a 200ft tall machine that close to it? I think there are many things about the JW tripod that doesn't follow the description of the book, still, it's a quiet cool machine.

100 feet actually but bear in mind that in the book the legs are mostly submerged at the time of the battle. It's pretty deep there.

Yes, that works for me too ! Kell, with a verry BIG "L" on back of Fighting Machine ! *ROFL* Argh, the imagination of it is too funny !!! "Now Mr Overlord, I'd like you to perform a three point turn, taking care to use your mirrors and observe for other alien attack vehicle road users..... !!!CRASH!!! ...oh b*gger...you've just demolished Tower Bridge"

I first thought that the FM machine on the Thunderchild picture was MUCH larger than 100 feet. But if you look closer you can see that the flag pole of the ship would actually hit the hood of the machine, giving it some perspective... But looking at the Dead London painting, the FM's on the background just have to be MUCH!!! taller than 100 feet. Greetings, Johan

yes you do get to see inside a martian machine in the PC game, i agree with the membrane idea, it seems to make sense, but im not really sure this has always confused me.

Well perhaps this will get me labeled a JW basher but I've never had a high opinion of that design for the tripods. The legs are splayed out much too far; if it lifted a leg it would immediately fall over! The huge "eyes" seem to be a deliberate attempt to make the thing seem insect-like, or more specifically beetle-like. As to the point about it being out of scale compared to the Thunder Child, and artistic license, well that goes along with my opinion: That JW is much more interested in his artistry than in making an attempt to portray the tripods accurately or even believably.

i guess its a matter of opinion. JW's FM was the first exposure to WOTW i had so its my deffinitive version of the FM. its also a design that sticks in your head, because of its distinctive look. it does look insect like, maybe that was JW's intention? but that adds to its creepyness.

The JW design is the one I "currently" like the most, though im looking forward to seeing the design for the SS film.
I like alot of the other designes ive seen, the Tom Kidd ones are also very nice, but the first I ever knew of WoTW, it was the musical, so somebody says tripod to me & thats the image that pops into my head.

Time to shatter those 'creepy feeling' dreams about JWs version. Look closer, does it ring any bells, look very closely, the artist Mike Trim who designed it, remember any other of his works?, ringing any bells yet - OK , big clue - JOE 90
The eye's are 'Joe 90's specs.
Mike designed many of Gerry Andersons shows, including 'Joe 90'.
Bet after reading this you won't feel the same way.

Could have been worse.. the cylinder could have looked like the 'cage' (the Rat Trap) and gone 'WHOOPWHOOPWHOOP'. www.bigrat.co.uk/images/equipment/rattrap.jpg [/img] ''LOOK! There they are! What did I tell you!'' ''Fool! That's just Joe 90!''

I have always wondered about this... A type of organic one-way membrane suits it.

I thoroughly agree with Lensman here. JW's concepts just do not look right. In the engineering of the FM the legs are too weak and spindly, the legs are placed too far apart, there are no tentacles or not enough, the position of the heat ray is wrong....it has to be carried aloft or it will eventually cut off its own legs...and those two bulbous eyes look more like a Big Insulting MOOOOOON rather than anything else. Why do we continually make/create excuses for other peoples incompetence? Be more critical for a change, folks!
I think also that the Handling Machine is pretty hopeless as well...great big pancake feet in the illustration, better in the game....the Digger is too slow and those Xeno thingies are totally ineffective. Also, I could never finish the damn game because of some obscure fault. I hope the whole JW thing is overtaken by someone with more engineering sense, more artistry and more money.

Yup, ditto here, they just don't do anything for me. Far too sleek and, well, boring... They look more like something NASA would design rather than Martians. Wayne would've been far better off going for the Dean brothers’ designs, but nooo, he had to go for the safe, yawn-inducing option.

Why do you call them JW tripods, there NOT JW tripods, there Michael Trim tripods - come on "In the engineering of the FM the legs are too weak and spindly, the legs are placed too far apart"The legs are not to weak at all. They are made of a 3 tube system, no joints in the main body of the legs so they are rigid. The position of the legs gives the machine more stability when motionless.l "there are no tentacles or not enough"Make your mind up. There is a tenticle, it can be seen from the hatch undermeath the undercarrage. After all, and what most forget, the JW album is 'based' (yes that word again where people think its means 'directly') on HGs story. As for the machines, boring?, not bad for such an iconic album cover by one of the 1960s/70s artists who designed many of Gerry Andersons much loved creations. The 'Dean' machines were not very practicable - if and when a stage show of the album were to be conceieved, the Dean machines were not sutable, hence the Dean brothers saying this in there book 'Magnetic Strom'.
