well we do know that the 'martians' are using cyliners so where are they launched from
if its from Mars its a plausable explanation, but not aliens tell me cylinders dont travel in packs across millions of light years!
Now that is crap.

Why was Mars included in the teaser trailer? There must be some relations with Mars in the film.

Only thing i can think of is that the astronomer Oglvy sees the alien build up from Mars and the planet is used as a staging area for the attack.
Like the UK was used to build up troops and equipment for the attack on occupied Europe in ww2.

It really is strange. I agree, the only thing that makes sense is the 'staging area' idea, but if you're going to go that far, why not just do the 'underground civilization' thing? It is fiction, after all. I do think it's cool that Gene Barry and Ann Robinson have appearances, though.

the only other way to tell it is to suggest that no one really knows where they are from which is plausable.
if the aliens attacked tomorrow i wont give a damn where they are from, i just want them to go away!

I probably would have preferred it if they were Matians, but what the hell, there are going to be tripods!!!! It would probably make sense that we know a little too much about mars for them to be martians, especially with the recent radio controlled cars that have been racing and picking up pebbles up there. Staging area makes sense............but..............where did they come from? (probably my home town)

The more I think about this, the more it's bugging me.
It's plenty scary when they start mucking with fundamental elements of the story. I don't even consider a time-change fundamental, but this book is about an invasion from Mars. Hello? They can't be more creative than that? Have the Martians hibernating as a race for a thousand years. Have them bury their complete civilization underground, and now the geothermal is giving out...
Yes, we're going to have tripods. I hope the production designer has never, ever, seen any of the MechWarrior games. I don't want some heavy, blocky, thing with huge thick legs that no launcher (gun or otherwise) could ever lift into a transfer orbit. I love MechWarrior, but it doesn't fit with this book, IMHO.
"Spielberg's film will hew closely to themes and events in Wells' novel, featuring such elements as the red weed and the black smoke, as well as a cellar sequence right out of the book."
No, Spielberg's film will follow the grand Hollywood tradition of yanking a few iconic visuals from a classic tale, and then changing the fundamental story to suit the whims of the person holding the $$ and their market-research trolls.
I so want to be happy with all of the movies. I know that I'll be alternately thrilled and disappointed as they play out, but messing with core elements is likely going to be like an itch I can't scratch.
*sigh* Bitter, party of one?

Appalling isn't it. Not only are they messing around with the time and location - now the invaders aren't even Martians. Typical Hollywood travesty!
I'm also quite sceptical as to whether they've even read the book. As you said Topaz they're just shoving in a few moments from the book in a vain effort to please fans.
It also looks like there might well be some war on terror references like some of us thought judging by these words in that interview - "And I think in the shadow of 9/11, there is a little relevance with how we are all so unsettled in our feelings about our collective futures".

those are 2 conflicting reports regarding the black smoke then. which to believe? and whats up with this quote:
what the hell? when did the martians terraform the earth? with the red weed? i'd hardly call that terraforming...

Its terraforming, anytime you introduce your own species of plants and animals etc to make life more habbitable for yourself, its considered a form of terraforming. I love how all of you people are nitpicking these early reports, just hoping and praying to give this flick a bad name before it gets to theaters. Christ give them a chance.

Even if Spielberg weren't doing this film, I'd be highly surprised if he hadn't read the book. Remember his obsession with space and creatures, especially in his early career; even if nobody had told him about the novel he would have picked it up somewhere and read it. He's pretty obsessed with tales of horror and sci-fi. And the creators of film adaptations always read the source material and make notes. They sometimes choose not to follow the book too closely, but they do read them. Spielberg's probably read it a fair few times now, taking notes, deciding what to take from the book and what to leave out. And how long does it take to read the book? It's not a very long one. The idea that Spielberg would do this film without reading and rereading the book is inconceivable, and I'd argue that the idea that he hasn't read it before deciding to start this project even more inconceivable. Your a stange one dude, your growing on me though i'll give you that, no sense of humour though Joke ;D Anyway it remains to be seen, at the moment it looks like it has more Wellsian almosphere than the faithful version, darker, more serious, a stonger sense of dread.

I do have a sense of humour but the human race dont get it!
In fact...wasn't the broken record mode on...a form of humour? Not good but it was myself laughing at myself constantly repeating the same opinion. Not just to you M. Dont get flattered.

yes, i'm sure the film will be fun to watch, it might even be cool overall. but my main gripe is that hey are supposedly doing war of the worlds... i mean, hell if they just wanted to remake independence day, i wish they would just be honest about it. i liked that movie, cheese and all.
its not that it won't be a good film overall. its that its blatantly ripping off WOTW.
