Ok,
So in the PC version of WotW Rage created a number of new machines for the martians to use, these included the electric machine, the telepaths and the Tempest (technically the flying machine and the scout machines as well, so i guess you can choose them if you want).
So with this in mind, what was your favourite? I know mine was certainly the tempest. Get a third gen one of those or three with smoke launchers and you were sure to whoop some ass!

Yeah the Tempest kicked ass! Spotting one of those when on the Thunderchild level of the PS game required new underwear.

I'd have to agree, the Tempest was a series piece of hardware. there's nothing that beats sending a trio of those big ol' boys into London to sort the place out. Most of the other machines are pants. I always stick to fighting machines and flying machines, with the odd bombarding machine thrown in for good measure. Electric machine = useless. Contrictor, what possible use could it be? Drones = pointless. The scouting machine must surely be the Reliant Robin of the Martian arsenal. It looks awful and it's not that practical for any use you might want to put it to. I don't know what the game designers were on when did all the Martian stuff, I mean, xeno-telepaths? what were they thinking? The Martians have black smoke and heat-rays, they don't need anything else. Just send in wave after wave of fighting machines, stick to landlocked sectors, and watch the pitiful humans run for their lives until london inevitably falls.

I'l just make a quick list! [Based on PS game and buy machines On the game!] Scout- Too small and weak Tripod- Good but too weak BiPed- Great! Powerful and good shield! Flying machine- Good but one hit-kill is bad for it... Sentry Guns- Great! Really pack a punch! Scanning Machine- Good but lacks attack power! Kamezaki Thing- Good in numbers.... Tempest- :-XNeed I say more? Insect things- Great! Lots of shield and attack! Handling Machine- Good but too slow. Xeno_Telepath-Goodbut lacks movability... Constrctior-Great!!!! Is there any more??? Well the Tempest and Constrictor and very good machines! Wish I had One!

[glow=red,2,300]I found the drones could be plenty useful... occasionally I'd make a chunky invasion force just made of drones and attack a sector. I'd leave them all where they arrive except for one and send them one at a time, attacking vital fences, guns, tanks and if I'm lucky even command posts. Once they are expended I usually have a way cleared into the heart of the enemy so once I 'lose' the battle I move up the second force of tripods, flying machines etc.

I once sent a number of Drones into London, guiding them through the streets to Big Ben. They exploded and took the Houses of Parliament with them... yet because they were destroyed themselves in the process, I didn't win the sector. I later sent some fighting machines into London, only to find a regular human base where Big Ben should have been. Interesting glitch. I destroyed it but the game didn't end. No humans remained but the game still went on. I left the clock running just for fun... I worked out that I finally got bored around 1943 or so ( difficult to work out as the Martian clock simply counts the days ).

Scout : weak & vunerable - 3rd generation not to bad. F.M. : always a favourite - again, 3rd generation has excellent armoury!! H.M. : only good for one thing really! Fl.M. : has got the vunerablity of the scout. Tempest : The mutts nuts ;D!! Scanning Machine : not alot of point really! Xeno thingy ma - jig : Good at killing things with one hit - has an excellent sound effect when moving Electric Machine : Good in numbers - but breaks quite quickly. Tempest & Drones : Never really used them, so can't coment. Constrictor : Good if you've ran out of shaving foam - has got it in abundance ;D. Of all the Machines, I think the Tempest & 3rd generation Fighting Machine are my favourites

I havent played that game in ages. Strangely, when I try to install it, the installer only makes an appearance while i am shutting the computer down. Strange, eh? If anybody could remedy this I would be most appriciative.
By the way, I am new here. Nice to see such a freindly community based around such a fantastic book.

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works. I always prefer being the humans. Throwing wave upon wave of tracked vehicles and self propelled guns at em! I also sometimes like using the human defences more - the different gun emplacements you can get are great.

I am pretty sure some1 mentioned that the game struggles with the whole windows XP thing (ie it doesnt work under XP) but that there is a fix around the net somewhere to solve the issue, once this is installed it MIGHT work Such is the unpredicatable nature of computer software

Hokey dokey, Mekanik.. The fixed exe basically allows you to play the game on XP.. here's what to do.. Right click on this link and download the zip file.. www.londonbwts.co.uk/Funnies/stuff/WarOfTheWorldsFixedexe.zip(Thanks to Wi99y for that) Unzip it with Winzip. Take the 'Wowexe' from you 'Unzipped' folder (right click select 'cut' or 'copy' ) Go to your 'Jeff Waynes war of the Worlds' folder in the program files (assuming you've already gone through the game set up process) Once in there right click again and select 'paste'. You will be asked if you want to replace 'Wowexe'. Click yes. Make sure no other programs are running (the game has a habit of convincing your PC that there isn't room for it to run even if there is.. it's old dontcha know). Play the game. If you haven't got a soundcard you probably won't get any sounds or anything but purchase the Ulladubulla remix album, play that and get a friend to shout 'Yes sir' and 'We're running out of steel' periodically whilst playing the game and you'll be pretty much there. Let me know if you have any other problems.

Sound is no problem - I have onboard and it is supprisingly good.
I think you misunderstand my problem - The Installer does not work - This is a problem I have with ALL old software. Strange, eh?
Thanks Again.

As do I. Can you run the game without problem?
And do you run any other old software on your PC?
