[glow=red,2,300]I'd have to agree with Bayne on that one. Except I must admit, I'm much more of a defensive Martian General; the flying machines would edge forward until a human emplacement was spotted, then the bombarding machines would blow it into next week. One or two units of fighting machines would stand abreast the bombarding machines to intercept any vehicles that were too quick for the heavy canister launchers to catch.
This was my surefire method to Martian victory. As a side note, I would generally not claim any extra territories than possible with the initial units I landed with until I had researched lvl. 3 fighting, bombarding and flying machines. Ah! And as for those pesky Ironclads, if you have to fight them and a base, stay out of range of the Ironclads' weapons (far faaar inland) and use the aforementioned method to level the pathetic human defences. After the center of ragtag simian resistance has fallen (and this next part takes a bit of finesse), fly one group of flying machines over the ironclads (which by now would almost certainly have moved as close to the coast as they can) from one side of the map to the other, and the Ironclads will target them instead of your advancing bombarding machines. The trick is to keep the flying machines moving, as they can't take many shots.
So, take 2-3 units of bombarding machines, a liberal sprinkling of high-explosive canister rounds, 2-5 Ironclads and a dash of flying machines, blend quickly (preferably whilst weraing a flak jacket and kevlar gloves) and leave to sink slowly to the bottom of the ocean!
What? What do you mean you only want to know what my favourite machine is?!
The subject heading..? Oh.
Well, okay then.
It's the uh... bombarding machine. For range and pure firepower.[/glow]

The Bombarding machine was just sick, once you got a large group of them nothing could stand in your way, not even heavy naval gun emplacements. They were probably my favorite unit, because all the other martian land units suffered from very bad pathing problems and spent just as much time bumping into eachother as they did trying to shoot the enemy. But it was still amazingly satisfying seeing a legion of fighting machines striding towards a human base, releasing their black smoke then blasting everything with their heatrays.

Gen 3 Tempest with smoke launchers. When you absolutely positively got to waste an entire army, accept no substitute.

Well, one thing i can offer you all is an explanation of the constrictor, from the PC version. Truth be known, i couldnt figure it out until the A.I used it against me with lethal effect.
Simply put, he is your prime battleship removal tool, especially on defence. The "shaving cream" that the constrictor sprays out stops units from moving or firing. Its not usually much use, considering that human forces are very numerous, but against a single battleship, a spraying constrictor will prevent any form of action and thus you`ll be given an easy kill against what is usually a challenging target.
Basically, you park constrictors on the battleship approack points and on islands, allowing immediate strikes against the sea borne threat.
***
As to the exploding drones, well, they were a hit or miss tool. The A.I uses them quite effectively, but its harder for a human controller. Again, they are better on defence because that way they rarely have to deal with long range incoming fire.
***
It was always true, however, that the fighting machine was a solid beast. Tempests were nice, but it was more effective just to upgrade the factory to grade 3 and then send in the fighting machines as good as you could get them. Tempests were better when you had lost the advantage and needed to wade into a zone plastered with enemy firepower.
***
Electric machines were the only useless one the martians had, really. Their pathetic range and surprising lack of firepower meant that they were easy targets. In defence they were ok, but considering the fuss it took to build them, they were just trashy.

Would someone mind posting a labelled image of the various machines, perhaps using the jeff wayne promo poster where they are all in a line?

On the 'Make my megastore' site for Jeff Wayne products it has the schematics for most of the machines.
But sure, let me see if I can do that image for you.

Just F.Y.I.: If anyone's interested,I thought you would like the cheats for the PC game. Here they are........... punyhumans:kills all humans onscreen. icomeback:displays all research. youlikeit:100% efficiency. atchooo:kills all Martians onscreen. Nice, simple and easy, but the research and efficiency cheats do help immensely, especially when you're trying to build a beachhead.

I would have to say that my faves would be the 3rd Gen FM and 3rd Gen FlMachine.Good armor and weapons, and in sufficient force of each ,bloody unstoppable.Of course, this is just my personal variation.I prefer to send in a combination assault, with FMs for land/sea,and FlMs as general heavy support from the air.Usually I can frag most targets in relatively short time, with minimal losses.
