I figured id stick a post in to say what most people have probably felt for some time now. I think we can safely say Pendragon Pictures' version of War of the Worlds is NEVER going to see the light of day. It is a bit disappointing because i felt a lot of the cocnept sketches showed real promise, particularly the handling machine sketch which i really liked. However, for whatever reason, it appears that they have pulled the plug, as Rob has said they have had nearly a year and a half just to do SOMETHING different to the web page for the film, never mind actually start making it, and yet there has been nothing and no news from timothy hines for nearly the same amount of time. It is encouraging (despite some peoples reservations) that when asked about it, Tom Cruise said "It hasnt gone away it just takes time" because it would appear that it is still very much in his plans to do a film of it and if steven spielberg gets involved we could end up with something very very good (or ok yes we could end up with some over amercanised hollywoodified (new word there lol) crap) so lets just sit tight and hope NB I aint read anywhere that its official that pendragon has cancelled its version im merely saying it certainly looks that way

There is no place in WoTW for overblown sentiment or dumbing down so I'd rather Mr Spielberg kept his nose out of it, we're still recovering from AI... As Timothy Hines said (RIP) they should "cut it for R" (as the Americans say) and then edit down to a lower certificate if deemed appropriate, rather than making a family movie. If Dreamworks end up doing it, be resigned to cuddly plush handling machines ;D

[glow=red,2,300]Indeed, they can release the full version in markets that will accept it in cinemas and the rest of us can see all the nastiness on the DVD [/glow]

Assuming a new film ever get's made in our lifetime...I feel that we're all going to be disappointed with the "New Movie". A/It will be so removed from the book, that it'll end up like that crappy WotW rip off "Independance Day". B/It'll be aimed at 12 year olds, with an attention span of 5 seconds. B/Jeff Wayne's overblown musical will be all over the film like a bad rash. A/Tom Cruise-Control and his Teeth will single handly conqure the Martians...Hooray!. We're doomed, whoever make's it. B-B.

Agreed (except on the Jeff Wayne point, I think the music's brilliant and would add to any film. For an example, just see how his excellent score for 'Golden Rendezvous' lifted a damp squib of a film into a classic ;D). It's almost inevitable, however, that Jim Carrey will be cast as the Curate... AAAARRRRGGHHHH!!

Hahaha!!! I think that Rowan Atkinson should do the Curate. (Don't get any ideas of Mr Bean in front of a Fighting Machine NecroManiac.) We all must hope that there WILL be made a good version of WOTW on the white screen. Keep praying!!!! Take a look at Starwars after The Phantom Menace everybody thought that the prequels were doomed while Attack of the Clones whas quit of a hit. Tripod

Aaaagh! I can see it now, Richard Curtis does WOTW! Perhaps they'll set it in a trendy part of London...Hugh Grant is the uptight, inarticulate writer...he forms an on-off romantic liaison with a martian overlady in a farcical comedy of errors...then everyone lives happily ever after Oh and Rhys Ifans saves the world with his enormous underpants... The End. Hahaha!!! I think that Rowan Atkinson should do the Curate. (Don't get any ideas of Mr Bean in front of a Fighting Machine NecroManiac.) We all must hope that there WILL be made a good version of WOTW on the white screen. Keep praying!!!! [glow=red,2,300]Rowan Atkinson can play a serious role fairly well, I could see him in the film without too much trouble, in the right role. [/glow]

FELICITY KENDAL The one talented actress who could save the movie. Why not cast her as the narrator?...She could do a "Ripley" and bash those nasty Martians over their nuts with her "Good Life" Shovel. Ahem. B-B.

Somehow I can't really see Felicity Kendal in a remake of Alien (if the BBC did it then there would no doubt be plenty of "run down lots of corridors stuff" a la Doctor Who ). Somehow she wouldn't be formidable enough..even with her most disapproving rebuke: "TOM!" (Skerritt) [indignant frown, disappointed voice, addressing Dallas whilst refusing to open airlock ;D] And most of the other characters would be spending far too much time trying to get into her knickers... Personally, whenever I see either Kendal or Atkinson on the TV I just can't help preparing to laugh. Sorry!...typecasting - don't you love it?! JJ

Old thread, but I ggota weigh in on this one. Being a product of the apparently much loathed Hollywood community (at least, loathed here...), and a veteran of the new Battlestar Galactica and Secret Adv. of Jules Verne, I'd like to respond to some comments: 1) In the US, as you probably are aware, the creative minds are usually crushed by corporate (lack of) minds... Speilberg will be the exception, if he wants his way, he'll get it... 2) Yes, the "suits" here don't get UK drama. When I was working with the "Verne" folks, I saw a truly wonderful show (except for the lead actor- ick) get ground-up in the Hollywood maw. A case of "Not Made here" and "Too British in its pacing" cost the US market a good show, except for the limited showings on the Sci-Fi Channel... 3) That said, shows like Battlestar and Trek (which I also worked with) tend to dissolved into LONNGGG talking scenes (cheap to do) with brief effects sequences (note: new Battlestar not as much like this, as their FX supervisor is very aggressive about having his way with the FX) 4) From the looks of the Pendragon site, it has all the appearances of a company trying to keep the illusion alive. Yet it lists a release date of March (!) 05. I truly hope they make it to the US, as I would dearly like to see a decent VIctorian version. I just hope it isn't threadbare, or replete with bad casting, etc. Just some random thoughts from a colonial. RP

I think he meant March (!) 05 as March 2005, which would be accurate.
But..

Yep, based in Seattle, Washington. If I was a little closer, I'd run up there myself to see what's happening, but unfortunately, that's a bit of a trip just for a quick recon.

I've said before that we need a man/woman on the ground in Seattle. Someone to do some recon, as you say. Knock on a few doors and keep a blog here on the forum. I'd like to make the trip myself, but unfortunately I'm on the east coast and it just ain't practical. Maybe we should muster the troops and call for volunteers?
