those houses were right in front of the beams path, the width of the supports is far smaller than the gap between supports, right.
Then why didnt those houses go BOOM when the 'heat ray' passes between the supports and takes them out before the tanker hits them.
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuh....

Because there are no houses taller than the bridge?

Dang! He has a point. But the thing is, how does Cruise know it's time to flee if it is the first cylinder? That's why I lean to the heat ray explanation, and that Cruise has been panciked by something he has seen earlier. But then again, wouldn't the cars atop the bridge explode if the heat ray struck? That's the baffling thing: Lack of monstrous crashing noise, massive cloud of earth, green flash - not a cylinder then? Lack of exploding cars and houses on fire - not a heat ray then? Could it be a third weapon? Or the cylinder landing on the other side of the river, with the shockwave rippling along and destroying the bridge. But then wouldn't that knock down the houses as well from the impact? Perhaps not all the effects elements are finished? But it looks a finished shot. Is the fire from the destroyed tanker or from the heat ray? I say the heat ray, because of all the quantity of it. Whichever way: A: It looks mighty impressive. B: The tone is right. C: I'm babbling. Pete According to what ive heard a cylinder hits the 'bridge' and travels along the ground ripping out the supports. peeps forget one thing. The heat ray is a continuous beam yes? Then why wasnt it hitting objects beyond the spaces between the supports? yes?

All I can say is YES! WOOO HOOO! that was ACE! 30 seconds of ace-ness! get in the car or you are going to die! No messing around there!
On the bridge conundrum, after watching it again and again I am still undecided however I am inclined to believe its a cylinder skidding along the groung behind the bridge, doesnt have to be the first cylinder either. The bridge is being tossed as something runs along it.
remember the extras were told a spaceship was landing on the bridge.

Shame Cruise didn't screech out in a high pitched voice, "Get in the back of the van!" like that copper in Withnail & I.
Heh! I thought you'd like it Motile.
(Takes Motile by the hands and does the slightly embarrassing "We're so excited," dance! "*Yay!* *Yay!* *Yay!* I'm so excited! Lally lally! I'll be having nightmares tonight! Lally lally!")

Retracted Ash sorry, typing faster than I can think!! ;D To rusti, I think either the heatrays firing angled up towards the bridge, or in short bursts. I think we would be shown the cylinder crashing if it was. (much more of a money shot!) But whatever, there are yellow hit explosions preceded by little white distorted bits, so I'm guessing they're being hit by something. Anyway I agree with pete, the tone looks dam fine! ;D P.S please post up this other pre-knowledge/gossip about the trailer, I'd be interested to hear what people have said.

...remember the extras were told a spaceship was landing on the bridge. Director: "Okay, now you turn to see a spaceship landing on the bridge..." Extras: (Generic awe in faces) "Oooh. Aaaah." Director: "Sorry, sorry. Did I say 'to see a spaceship landing on the bridge?' What I meant was... to see an almighty huge cylinder crash into the other side of the bridge, for the bridge to flip up in sections throwing cars and people around, for a petrol tanker to fall from on high and smash through the houses exploding - as you all run like hell and get incinerated by the expanding fireball, whilst waving your arms and generally screaming." Extras: (Generic terror on faces) "Ooooh! Aaaaah!" Director: "Again! Only more brown pants this time. Tom Cruise has a gun. He's not afraid to use it on extras who don't pull their weight. Plus we'll give that oaf Harry Knowles your phone number!" Extras: (Genuine terror on faces) "OOOOH! AAAAAH!" Pete

There are yellow flashes in succession but they could be the cylinder hitting each collum in turn, in the first trailer the heatray flash is green, as for the distortion efect, the cylinder would be very hot wouldnt it? Dakota might have seen the cylinder coming down when she made the pigglet noise. Spielberg wont show too much in a 30 second teaser, especialy a money shot like a cylinder.

I'm thinking flashes at the top not the bottom. Why is the suspension bridge melting? Still whatever the cause, it looks cool.

it certainly does.
if you listen to the sound you can hear a boom and a grinding noise, cant make out if its the bridge or a cylinder or whatever

I don't see how a cylinder could cause 5-6 explosions like that. And it's not 5 or 6 cylinders either. Maybe it's a new weapon we haven't seen or heard about. Maybe a sonic blaster, like Pete suggests. Not all explosions involve fire.
And regarding it being the first encounter or the first falling cylinder, then no. First line:"Please, tell me what you saw." Someone, likely Cruise, knows they're coming...

The "explosions" start at the suspension bridge which is shattered by some impact, then the bridge colapses and is smashed in rapid succession, each time a support is hit there is a yellow flash as if something hot and big smashed into the river shattering the suspension framework before sliding along behind the bridge.
But who knows right? Spielbergs got the atmosphere spot on.
