Hit the nail on the head? Nail in the coffin more like!
The BS remake isn't all that different from the original - it's just moved on as it would have done if the events had been true. Even so, the old series still holds up well today, parallelwise.
same goes for Dr Who - it's about time travel anyway, and it you can modify every element of it now (as the only sticky point was that he only has 7 regenerations, each being successively younger until Sylvester McCoy broke that tradition). Even the TARDIS can have it's Camoflage chip fixed to appear in any modernised form.
The problem people are having with SSs modernisation is the removal of core elements of the book. Yes, there are modern day parallels, but SS is ditching some of them in favour of af a blockbuster alien invasion movie. Hence the worry about another ID4. The more you take away, the less it is WOTW.

I actually think the problem is that people have differing opinions of exactly WHAT is a core element of the book. For example, i happen to think that having aliens instead of martians is not removing a core element of the book since the story would have worked just as well if the aliens had come from mars or any other planet, even beyond our solar system, they could still be presented as having close paralells with humans. Malf disagrees however as is his right to.

The thing is though is as AsheRaven said on another thread. Its rerpetitvness.
Malf hates the SS film. I know the type, hes so determined to hate the movie that he actually will make himself hate it. Its a psycological thing, you want to hate something enough you will.
Motile and me well, we have problems with the PP version, wont go into details but we all know what our reservations are. Truth is i know i will hate this film. I will pick it to death so im no better than Malf in that respect.
I tell you all what, Malf you go to Bayonne and speak with Stephen, me and Motile will fly to Seattle and talk to Tim.
Try to convince both parties of the error of their ways yes?
(before being laughed at all the way home.)

you know the type, huh? obviously not. i don't hate the film, and i've stated MANY NUMEROUS TIMES that i AM excited about it and that i WILL go see it. however, you're more interested in getting personal about all of this than you are in honestly debating about it because somebody happens to have an opinion different than yours concerning your beloved SS project. most of your replies to my posts have definitely had a 'personal' tone to them, bordering on insulting.
admitting that you're 'no better than me' just justifies my point, as you obviously see me as something less than what you consider worthy of... well whatever example it is you use when you judge people.
there is absolutely NO NEED to get personal over this rusti. like is said before, if you don't like what i'm posting, or it somehow offends you that i'm giving my opinions here, then by all means... don't read my posts. don't respond to them.

You were the one getting personal, dont drag me down to your level dude, throwing a wobbly and calling me vauge.
I can get very nasty if you want, trust me getting nasty is part of my profession as a security officer. Do you really want to make it personal?
Well?

Anyway guys back to war of the worlds........?
I cant see this movie being like ID4 at all to be honest, nothing indicates that Spielberg is changing anything to make it like ID4, its just getting modernised, which is cool, why not?
When Mr Hines releases his authentic version that doesnt mean we cant have another vaersion ever again does it? but where do you go from authentic? you have to modernise, im glad Spielberg is doing it too, but I must say im excited about a new Spielberg Sci-Fi movie based on war of the worlds but I am way more excited about Jeff Waynes version. Im more curious about what Mr Hines will do with his as it looks very syalised, his style may not be my cup of tea.
Just my thoughts

Hey c'mon chill out guys this seems to be getting out of hand, everyone has differing opinions otherwise it would be a very boring world why not just agree to disagree on the matter getting personal isn't going to solve anything. As I said in a previous post I can see both sides of the argument and to a degree I agree with you both on certain aspects just dont get nasty a film isn't worth it especially one none of us have even seen yet.

I agree with philiev, THIS is exactly what i could see coming which is why i said the thread could get locked its certainly heading that way now. lets all chill take a deep breath and get back to talking about war of the worlds, otherwise those of us who DO want to discuss this rationally and civilly will be denied the chance to do so.
