I agree with Iron Man. The Martians start as vulnerable Martians...they need to immediately get into vehicles. If there's only three or less Fighting Machines around...one handling machine and some smaller tripods, that could balance out both races, while Humans have a lot of different vehicles and weapons. Plus, Tripods can move slower than humans. The Martian weapons take a lot longer to fire and "reload"- while the Humans are considerably faster. Faster Respawn times and such.

People online never work as a team however, so that would be hard to make. I really do think that you should be able to shoot rifles and medium machine guns into the hood and plaster the martians because otherwise you couldn't use any class other than heavy explosives to take them down in vehicles. Generally yes people don't work together online but recentlly i've had some cracking games on Desert Combat where teamwork was a focal point in achieving victory. As i've said i don't see anything wrong with doing a 'classical version' which is a pure adaptation of the book. Then another version set in modern times, which more or less is based on the film. I actually agree with you on killing aliens in machines, but only CERTAIN machines. For instance in Desert Combat the driver for the Shilka, and the machine gunner for the M1 Abrams are both vulnerable to small arms fire since they're not protected. This same principle could easily work for a WOTW game. I definitely agree with Twisted Rabbit's last post too!

Any updates as far as this idea goes Armored?
Has anyone bought Battlefield 2 yet? It's just as addicting as the first and Vietnam, except it's a bit more refined and includes a lot of new features.
Most importantly you can now form squads in battle and chat with them via your microphone.
Trying to play the game on your own without help of a team doesn't work as well anymore. It feels more realistic and your team relies on you to perform certain tasks (medic, fixing vehicles, supplying ammo). From the ringing in your ears to the disoriented blur you experience when shells go off near you or you're close to death. It's an intense game.
There's also going to be a BF 2 mod editor which will be released shortly, which will make creating this WOTW mod a lot easier!
It may seem odd to start with this engine when it takes place in modern times, but it's a vast improvement over the earlier games and no matter what BF game you use, you're going to have to create new models for almost everything.

It would totally kick a$$ if one would make a Mod of this! PS: What's your nickname on Desert Combat Iron Man?
Tripod

I used to have the nickname 'Iron Man', now it's 'Top Gun' plus or minus a few '</> & [/]' lol.
Although i won't be purchasing Battlefield 2 until i format my PC, get a new Graphics Card, DVD players and RAM!
I'd love to see a Destroyer face up to a Tripod. Do they still have Warships in Battlefield 2?

So...right then, if we can pull a few more modelers into this we can get the ball rolling then? Also could use someone who is familiar with the mod creater+making a website

I can make a website. I have ftp space we can use unless someone really wants to hash out the money for a new domain.
The editor for BF2 hasn't come out yet, but it will. We'll have to get someone from the Planet BF2 forums or something for that I guess.
As far as designs go, I assume we're not going to be using Waynepods right? That's just asking for legal trouble if we develop Battlefield: Jeff Wayne. lol.
I think we should use book-like tripods.

I think the truest we can get is something around the looks of the Alvim Corréa drawings. The drawings Wells "approved" of.

could always make a mod. But, can you imagine the team stacking, everyone would go marty, and also, what would the martys do when NOT in a machine? Scuttle about and get shot full of holes by angry human soldiers lol Improvise, you could give em some sort of anti grav pack thingy, wich enables them to trod along like on Mars, and give em sort of hand held fire weapons.

I suppose, but it'd be kinda hard to imagine some new Martian machines, like the navy part, i mean, isnt mars red and not having water on it? Not to mention the different classes would be weird, i mean humans could be easy, but Martians: Red thing, Grey Thing, Spider Operator? Sure it would be neat but tough to pull off! I,ve been thinking abou this. We could have couple of Tripod versions, like the paramount one, the jeff wayne one, and a half life 2 strider like scout tripod. And the FM by Our own LancerAdvanced (one of the most excellent models i,ve seen. Use the George pal machine as the flying machine. Handling machine as a sort of APC/mine layer. Control points and their defenses could be for the humens, Flag and machineguns. Martians, The wobbly thing and a heat ray.

This is one of the first Zeppelin airships from around 1900. This would be awesome to use in the original H.G Wells version, as the book says the invasion happened sometime in the early 20th century. You could do air raids on the Martian pits! Even though one blast from the heat ray would take down the hydrogen filled envolope down in a huge ball of flames! ;D

Forget the wayne machines i mentioned.
We could have the Tripods in diffrent variations.
For instance, the tripods seen in the old drawings from the period around the release of the book could be like mk1 tripods, Lancers tripods could be like mk3 an the mk2 would be a crossbreed between those 2.
Though the striders i would stick with, handy for maps like London, not to huge therefor a more surprising effect if one suddenly comes around a corner.
Spielberg like tripod could be included as a commander tripod.

Handling machine should be able to repair other units when they are in and around a martian check point.

Actually, the tripods would probably all fit into the same universe to give the game some sense of realism to make combat that much more intense. ArmoredTrackLayer and I are actually going to try and get this mod developed. I definetly agree a zeppelin-like balloon would be a great unit, but hydrogen does have the problem of exploding into a firey mass. Should be a way to protect the balloon. Maybe heavy metal plates on the underside of the balloon so the heatray has to burn through that first, or some sort of spray gun that seals holes in the balloon with a foamy sticky substance...which can be fired by the crew on board. I'll let you all know how this comes along. I'll put up a website and forum soon to start discussion, suggestions, and stuff.

Heres some nice prints of soildiers around the time WOTW is set. www.military-prints.com/uniforms.htmwww.military-prints.com/infantry_regiments.htmI'll try and find some more equipment prints aswell. The Martians should have very high levels of health. I'm sure their thick muscular bodies could withstand alot of fire from turn of the century rifles. And aren't we forgetting something?? Martians can carry the heat ray box in the book! You could also use earth.google.com to get some great 3d maps of Surrey! minus the moden buildings though!
