i don't know...shouldn't the tenticles surround the mouth? i always imagined them as having them in a circle around the mouth like in Wells desription.

I Always imagined the tentacles to emerge from the main body- again not true to the text, but a little different from here. Something more octopus like.

I hope the Martians aren't shown too clearly as I think it would give them more of an air of mystery.

I'd be curious to see if there's been any advance on the image we've seen- though I guess it may appear in the concert (just a few hours to go- oooOOOOOOooooooo!!!!)
This goes with all the concepts we've seen so far- they all look pretty solid, but it'd be interesting to see how things are going-like everyone's got time for sending us more appetisers!!!

Funny stuff!! I reackon that Black Smoke is the by-product of Martians smoking red weed.

H_C imagines a sign stuck in the middle of the Red Weed which says "Don't Walk On The Red Weed - Smoke It!"

Ever wondered why passive smoking has been bad for your health? Wells' shows us why in his book: WOTW!
Passive smoking has never been so dangerous before!

Well it's got 2 large dark eyes by the looks of it, a rounded head, v shaped mouth with it's pointed upper lip [ as far as I can make out] and Gorgon groups of tentacles so it appears quite faithful to the books description. Thank god I've got a new monitor screen. I can actually make things out properly now.

In a group round the mouth were sixteen slender, whiplike tentacles, arranged in two bunches of eight each. --II-2
I could quibble about the eyes not being round-- "luminous disks"-- as Wells describes, but given the necessity of translating word to picture I think it's a remarkably good job of making the Martians look menacing and still remaining pretty close to canon.
I'm not so sure that isn't the best placement for the tentacles. If they are to ever "walk" on them, that arrangement will work much better than having them gathered tightly in bunches right at each side of the mouth.
Perhaps I shouldn't get my hopes up, considering what happened with the Pendragon production, but still I have a feeling that in another year or so we are *not* going to be moaning that WotW hasn't received a good period piece movie adaptation!

I also dont like the way that the tenticles seem to come from underneath the body, like they are retractable. I think they should be more octopus like The tentacles look the way Wells described them, as thin and rope-like or whip-like. Wells did not describe the Martians as octopus-like. Remember the Martians had atrophied bodies, they didn't use their tentacles to walk around much, and when they did it was under only 4/10 of Earth's gravity. Besides, that picture shows them in a watery environment, suggesting they spent much or most of their time floating. If I had to live on a world with 2 1/2 times the gravity I was used to, I'd try to spend as much time as I could floating in water too! the tenticles seem <snip> way too weak to do anything like pilot a tripod. I don't understand why you'd say that. How much strength does it take for you to flip on a turn signal lever, or twist a knob on a dashboard? And Id just to say that this is the worst things weve seen from the movie so far, and that its the only bad thing. I'd be quite happy with this design for the Martians. It's the Jeff Wayne Tripod design I object to-- *nothing* like what Wells described. I like the human-like head shape, adds to Wells' suspisson that they were once like us. Hear, hear! You've hit it precisely.

Very reminiscent of the design of the Rutans from Doctor Who [ref. "Horror of Fang Rock"] (except involving less bubble wrap and shiny paper ;D) LR

I don't like it's eye's. They are the eyes of a grey. The martians should have luminous disks not black almond shaped cliche's. And yes, it does look like Beavis.
Plus it's too green.

Actually motile, if you look closely, the eyes aren't black - more like a translucent green. It's probably the shadow of the surroundings which is making them appear black in the image. I agree I would prefer the skin to appear less green and more an oily brown as described in the book KR

It's been explained but the skin looks green because of the light of the inside of the ship/cylinder.
