Creepy! (the Beavis likeness I mean, the Martian is scary too.)

He, He! yes Beavis is enough to give you the creeps and there is a slight resemblance.
On a serious note though, let's hope that there's some faithful to the book tripods in the film aswell. Jeff Wayne looks as if he's getting some talented people there.

Then again, how can he abbandon his own tripod design!

Of course. The answer is to have both! On the windows 95 game there were other tripods aswell as the Trim/Wayne ones.

[glow=red,2,300]I like it though the eyes seem too strettched for me, the lower lip seems a bit funny and I've never been a fan of the two lengths on tentacles, still better than some other attempts...
As for the tripods, I think it's a cert that we'll see the re-designed JW singniature tripod, I'm not sure if we'll see any of the game designs other than the handling and flying machines though. [/glow]

I LOVE the JW FIGHTING MACHINE.
But in the new design I am not keen on the new BULGING eyes. (Anyone else feel the same?).

That looks fantastic!!! The expression reminds me of Beavis of Beavis and Butthead fame. ROFL, the martian creeps around in the pit and to the horror of the crowd it made eary and creepy sounds. Martian: hehehehe this is gonna be cool hehehehe yeah hehehe i,m gonna go get some nacho,s hehehehe and porn hehehe porn is cool.

The actual body and legs look great but from what I can tell most of the people commenting on the eyes have said they don't like them.

Can I just say that I dont like the version of the Martian at all.
Maybe he will look better when he isnt bathed in green light, but I have several issues with it.
One is that the tenticles seem way to thin to support the body, and way to weak to do anything like pilot a tripod.
The V Shaped mouth seems to be going over board on how Wells described it, and his entire head seems to be shaped wrong, almost too normal and human like to be truly Alien.
I also dont like the way that the tenticles seem to come from underneath the body, like they are retractable. I think they should be more octopus like and actually be attached to it, where as these, due to the different coloring, and overlay of skin around them, seem more like attached pipe cleaners to a deformed human head.
Also, the eyes are terrible.
And Id just to say that this is the worst things weve seen from the movie so far, and that its the only bad thing. So, I really hope they dont choose this design over the previously seen, better ones.

Good points Marcus and I can see what you mean. It's reasonably faithful to the books description but there are some things that could do with some attention maybe, especially the tentacles and possibly the eyes. It's only concept art so maybe this isn't the final image anyway.
If Jeff Wayne is making this an overwhelmingly faithful adaptation then I hope they go out of their way to get the descriptions right. My main gripe so far as a number of us have said is the eyes on the fighting and handling machines [ and that it's not live action].

I also agree with marcus with reguards the eyes, not that happy with them myself. However as for not being able to pilot a tripod with those tentacles, do we really know the ideal tentacle for tripod piloting? I like the human-like head shape, adds to Wells' suspisson that they were once like us.

Well I'd think its highly likely this 'concept' art will be very close to the final rendition.
The design is virtually identical to the drawings and animated representations of the martians in Wayne's PC game and I'm sure he'd like to maintain the house style.
Regarding the strength of the tentacles, just because they don't look strong doesn't mean they aren't... also, remember they were designed for propelling the martians on Mars not on Earth - they walked on Mars and dragged themselves about here.

The tenticals should look powerful enought to move the body in any enviroment, sure, they were weak on Earth, but these look like they would weak anywhere, including Mars. We have to take into account that no matter what the gravity of the enviroment their in, the head will always have to be propotional in weight to the strengh of the tenticles, and this just doesnt scream that too me.
