[glow=red,2,300]I've been reading '30 Strange Stories' and think that 'A Deal Of Ostriches' would make a great little movie. Quite a few Wells stories have made it into film (Untill recently I did not know that Empire Of The Ants was based on a story of Wells) many filmed in 'The Infinite Worlds Of H.G. Wells' by Hallmark, which earned my deep respect and enjoyment for saying it was 'inspired' by stories of Wells rather than making huge changes and then claiming that it was true to the original like many ghastly Hallmark classics (Journey to the Centre of the Earth without Arne Saknussum-or indeed any of the original characters or plot and 20,000 leagues Under the Sea with a female character and a love triangle added being good examples)
So, what else would averyone like to see, novel or short story, turned into film or remade for that matter [/glow]

The Man Who Could Work Miracles has been made into a movie, staring the meek looking fellow from the Topper movies. Fairly well done too.
Things to Come was made into a Sci-fi space movie some years ago with Barry Morse from Space 1999 fame showing up. It is VERY poorly done and bears utterly zero resemblance to the book.
Moreau could stand for a more true to the book version.
Invisible Man would be interesting to see as well.
The recent Time Machine movie with some heavy editing and reshooting of some scenes would fare much better. Still a good movie, but the beginning and end were glaring.
First Men in the Moon would be very nice to see. Though the original movie was quite fun and well done, taking advantage of its huge budget for the time.

well my oberservations are unique... if you want to see a good version of the Time machine go see the George Pal film if you want to see the invisible man then see the Claude Rains movie, and see "hollow man" as well since that is the modern [and kind of well done] version of the story for war of the worlds I think we are stuck with the george pal film until the new one comes out... nothing against the Pal film of course for the first men in the moon well I liked the old movie though I am afraid of what a new version of it may look like with the "all CGI and no acting" law in holywood now. the only book [outside of the short stories] I think they didnt cover was the food of the gods... but in my opinion we do not need a new time machine movie after Dreamworks butchered it we do not need another Dr. Moreau film since no one can do it right. as for WOTW I do hope the new film is good, but i have my reservations. the days of the comet had its own film too though it wasnt that good... but I doubt a new version will fare any better. after the terrible Dreamworks Time machine movie my confidence in holywood doing a good film based off a H. G wells book is quite low.

I'm not aware of a film version of "In the Days of the Comet." What was it called?
I know there was a French film inspired by "The Wonderful Visit" which I'd like to see (with subtitles).
The 1960's "First Men in the Moon" was an embarrassingly horrible piece of cinema which I'm rather ashamed to say I like. I just have to pretend its a remake of Melies' "From the Earth to the Moon." That makes it easier to digest.

I think you're thinking of "Night of the Comet" (1984), but that had nothing to do with H.G. Wells. Sean Connery was not in it.

Perhaps, but there is no record of an "In the Days of the Comet" on the IMDb, neither is there anything in Sean Connery's resume that matches. Must be the most obscure film in history...especially if Connery was in it...

Yup, 1979. Dreadful. At least he redeemed himself with "Time Bandits" a short time later...

The BBC did a brilliant version of "The Invisible Man" in the early eighties (I think it was a 3 or 4 parter). The protagonist was distinct as being an albino, which I don't think came through in the book . ..Can anyone remember anything about this version? I don't think the BBC ever repeated it or released it on video (I remember it was broadcast at Christmas time). Even better, does anyone know if its been shown elsewhere, or is available on video? [glow=red,2,300]I remember it well. I loved it, so my Grandma bought me a copy of the book that also contained WOTW... which is how I first read WOTW. I too would love to see that again (I was just a little tike when they showed it on ABC).. [/glow]

well in any case, I do rember the days of the comet movie being on sci fi channel... I only rememer a few parts of it... and yes I may be getting it mixed up with meteor.... but then again holywood does some strange things so the movie "meteor" may be based off wells novel, I cannot pinpoint it... my memory is swiss cheese sometimes but I do swear there is a movie for days of the comet... its just been so long since I saw it last...

The central message of "In the Days of the Comet" would be very appropriate for today's world.
Most Wellsians segregate "In the Days of the Comet" from Wells' recognized body of 'scientific romances' since it does tend to do more preaching than storytelling - a bit like "Food of the Gods." Given its distinctly sociological flavor its hard to imagine Hollywood would have attempted to film this one without an intensive rewrite importing lots of generic action-packed fluff and vapid characters. That said, certainly movies like "Meteor," "Armageddon," and "Deep Impact" owe their existence to "...Comet" as well as "The Star."

The other question might be. What of Wells' novels Hasnt been made into a movie of some sort yet?
The tally thus far has been
War of the Worlds 1+TV Series (and 2/3) Food of the Gods 2 Things to Come 2 First Men in the Moon 2 (3?) Time Machine 3 Island of Dr Moreau 3
And for the heck of it Jules Verne
20000 Leagues 4+2 TV series From the Earth to the Moon 2 (3?) Master of the World 2 Mysterious Island 2
I've certainly missed a few somewhere, but this should give a idea at least.

[glow=red,2,300]You missed the Invisible man TV series (or was it a mini series, either way it was british made and shown on ABC here in Australia) and there was a Mysterious Island TV series made in Australia too (though I only watched a couple of episodes of that)[/glow]

[glow=red,2,300]Lets not forget Empire Of The Ants!
I quite enjoyed the film when I was a kid, but it couldn't hold a candle to Them!
Having just finished reading the short story last night, the movie had very little to do with the story at all. Both had ants in it, that's about it! I really enjoyed the story.
It'd be nice to see a big-budget anthology TV series of accurate Wells short stories.[/glow]

The main one is definitely the (forthcoming?) true adaption of WOTW, with the walking tripods, HMS Thunder Child, etc. But not too gory (leave that stuff for the teen slasher movies). After that, I most would like to see 'In the Days of the Comet'. Of the many science fiction novels out there, that is one I really want to see on film someday soon. Like someone posted earlier, a real appropriate story for our times...

I think they could make a pretty good movie of The New Accellerator. It whas a fantastic story only it has to be much longer.
