"we actualy killed some tripods with our cannons so imagine what we could kill know"
You forget that the story has been moved the modern day, so why do people think the Tripods have to have the the same kind of limitations as in Wells original Novell? It would be a bit silly upgrading the time period and still thinking in Victorian Terms for the Tripods. The technology of Earth has been brought forward 100 years and look at the change in our own technology, so therefore one would expect a similar change in Martian Technology. In fact the change would be more marked with the Martian technology since we know that the pace of technology becomes faster as we become more advanced. For one computational power increases exponentially and it has a snowballing effect. We can now model things in months if not days to produce a result that which would have taken years before. I would highly doubt that Martians would not have computational devices of extreme sophistication.
Of course for a movie we have to strike a delicate balance. Make the Martians too advanced and there would be no movie since there would be no struggle as they'd simply 'remove' us from the Earth as if we were mere organisms to be washed off with soap. Make them too fragile and again we'd have no movie as we'd finish them off as soon as they got here!

The way i see it is that the Martians are vunerable..ok they are intellectually superior, but not so superior that we couldn't do anything to them.
They were alien. tech superior but had frailties which we didn't have the chance to exploit..... now modernising the martians will remove the sense of vunerability...

Not necessarily. The point is in the 20th century we discovered more than we have in the past 300 years, maybe more. That's why we've seen a rapid advance in technology, due to the fact that we discovered so many new facets of knowledge that have only been made available recently, and i might add in such a small amount of time.
The Martians are different, maybe they didn't have a technological evolution as sudden as ours. Maybe it's been a gradual process for them. Maybe they've discovered more areas of science, that doesn't leave them much room yet for sudden advancement in technology. Which gives us room to catch up so to speak.
The only extra feature i would like the Martians to have is 'EMP', everything else has to stay the same so we can stay close to Wells' vision without compromising his message and telling a very good story at the same time.
I even suggested an ending where the Military eventually won, ONLY and i mean ONLY due to the fact that the bacteria killed off many Martians, and left many more weak and dying. I mean come on, if there's Martians dying surely the Military would end their misery and finish them off.
However...that may not be deviating from the story...i mean if a bacteria is lethal, wouldn't it make sense that some Martians would die instantly, while others take a longer while to die?
If as i suggested that the Martian and Tripod/FM act as a Symbiote, so the Martian is the 'brain' while the Vehicle is the body. This would mean that if the brain is weakened, then the functions of the body would be severly hampered. Now Wells only described what happened to the Tripods in the local area, i think what happens elsewhere is open to interpretation.
Again i stress i'm not after a 'gung-ho' or 'the Military is great story', on the contrary i'm offering an inclusion to the story that only lenghtens it a little. I mean imagine the damage that has been done to our infrastructure, society, military our very way of life?
I also thought of a 'night battle' where the Tripods & /Fms use a more focused EMP to disable vehicles. While also deploying black gas to exterminate troops, think of it without gas masks and it virtual pitch black conditions you wouldn't notice black gas that well.
Many people may not like my suggestions, however i think i've been reasonable. People claim they don't want to see an all out 'ID4' type film. Though that would be nearly impossible considering the subject matter, i mean after all it is 'War of the Worlds'. Bad things happen in war, killing, loss, hope, revenge, brutality against the enemy perhaps.
I'd imagine after the treatment the Martians hand out to us, without compassion nor remorse which most of us hold as basic morales. We would retatliate in kind, with whatever we have, so perhaps a biological/chemical weapons element could be included. Perhaps age old weapons like mustard & chlorine gas to satisgy the die hard purists.
Put yourself in that situation, if you knew your family, friends, spouse/partner had been injured or killed by these Martians. Wouldn't you want revenge in any possible? By whatever means?
I hope people will read what i've had to say with open mind before saying anything.

Everyone here is missing the essential point to which the entire film hinges...
two words:
Artistic Licence.

anyway, what about lightsabres?
all you need is to chop the legs off and what good are the tripods.
In fact i just worked out a brilliant weapon siystem no one has thought of.
MINES! Heck even wells touched on the subject of using mines.
set up minefields in random locations, BOOM!

Have to agree with you there Rusti, although of course as long as they don't go overboard with artistic license!
They can't analyze what they can do in the movie too much otherwise they would never get it done. They would just end up writing some huge thesis ripe for publication in a major science journal instead!

here's a thought. since spielberg is gonna have his way H.G. Wells' material, then why are we talking about how the martians are gonna be restricted to what they were in the book, with our modern military being able to make short work of them? there have been a lot of points and counter points in this thread regarding technology and whatnot, and how vulnerable the martians will be, or the earth military will be.
however, this is not based on the book, it is spielbergs idea of what he thinks is an improvement i guess, so anyway... if you're gonna tear a new a-hole in the original story, why not make the tripods a thousand feet high, completely armored against any type of kinetic attack short of a nuclear blast, armed to the hilt with hundreds of laser batteries multiple heat rays being swung around at then ends of 1000 meter tentacles, legs as thick as redwood trees, feet being able to squash an entire tank battalion flat with one step, and oh yeah... and do we really think that the martians would overlook such a simple and devestating weapon as emp?
lets have tripods taller than the empire state building laying waste to everything in sight, shells exploding harmlessly off of the sheer brute strength and stability of the titanic legs of the martian war machines. i mean... come on, if we're gonna rape the original story, lets do it right

I actual fact guys in the book we never defeated the tripods until one was rammed with a whole ironclad, which toppled a tripod into the water and the heatray exploded, the other martian defeat was when one got hit full in the face with a shell, the tripods were not affected by shells or any other weapon, they just had open cowells.
So if SS has his tripods without open cowells and a tripod never goes into the water how can we say SS has any martian defeats at all?

But why cant you have shells exploding harmlessly off of the sheer brute strength and stability of the titanic legs when they a hundred feet tall? To hell with your EMP's and whatever, these guys are just bloody hard and they are bursting for a fight.

better still whilst we are in fairyland here... why don't the martians just lob a big asteroid towards us and wipe us out that way then wait a few decades and Earth would be human free ....provided Bruce Willis doesn't spoil their plan ....hey perhaps he did

So if SS has his tripods without open cowells and a tripod never goes into the water how can we say SS has any martian defeats at all? "Stay out of the water!" - Martian General. Martian General: "Mr Overlord, we've got to stay out of the water. There's an ironclad out there that'll kill!" Martian Overlord: "Nonsense, young mollusc! Deny access to the waters at the height of human hunting season, are you crazy? Now we're going to open up those beaches and harbours, and you aren't going to do a damn thing about it." Meanwhile: (Martian tripods frollicing in the water, playing splash with their tentacles and occassionally plucking humans from their boats with mighty tentacles.) Martian 1: "Randy! I hope that that dreaded ironclad, you know, the one called 'Thunderchild' don't come here. Maybe we should get back to the mothership." Martian 2: "Mothership's are for squares, man! What's the matter, honey? A little frightened?" Martian 1: "Oh, you! *Giggle*" (They kiss and spawn asexually in a budding frenzy) But on the waters, below their knees... CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUGGA CHUG! - CHUG CHUG CHUG - CHUGA CHUG CHUGA CHUG! The ironclad snaps their weedy shins! Martian 1: "Aieee! Raaaaandy!" Martian 2: "Barbara!" (etc.) Possibly Spielberg became slightly confused when making the film. Pete

Our bloooooood! (Said in a crazed walking stick waving Abraham Simpson way) The sterilised landing zones sound pretty cool. But 1000 foot tripods wouldn't work. They'd be incredibly difficult to frame in shots, for one thing, and the sheer incredibly size would become somehow boring quite quickly. Plus, how could one sneak up into Cruise's vicinty when he's hiding in a house or something. I wouldn't say Spielberg's raping the book. To do that you'd have to mock or incompetently handle the themes and messages of the book, which according to the following... Basket - yes. Tripods - yes Burns and vicious wounds - yes Mass exodus on foot - yes Technologically overwhelmed, humanity cannot defend - yes Average joe viewpoint - yes Low key suburban setting - yes I just think that apart from the present setting, and the added family element, and other minor changes Spielberg is pretty much following the ideas and themes and emotions of the book closely. Hurrah! Pete

No actually... Even in the book we could hurt them with our weapons, i don't want to see a retread of the '53 version. It's more of a case of.. "Humanity unprepared and caught off guard and gets an arse kicking - Yes" That seems better

Regarding the Paramount-tripods or the tripods in any of the up-coming films for that matter, which sound-FX do you think will accompany the visuals? Here I'm thinking both the sound of the machinery, but also the UULLAAH from the book. Of course, the JW-tripods will probably use the UULLAAH from the record and the Pendragon-tripods will probably follow the book too as close as realistically possible. Both their machinery will likely sound somewhat familiar, like a steamengine on steroids or something. But I hope Paramount uses a less "faithful" sound and come up with something as terrifying as the visuals. The sound alone of the forthcoming or victorious tripods should send chills down your back. I imagine an electric howling sound ala the creepy sound from the first ALIEN-movie or the weird howling sound from TV's "Lost". Anybody seen that? Imagine waking up to a howl like that. So what about the sound of the machinery? I suppose the Paramount-tripod will show the most advanced tripod of the 3 movies, so what do you imagine that would sound like?
