I will re-introduce myself: I am Neil and live in Stevenage, Hertfordshire (just up the road from DF! ). I work at North Hertfordshire college teaching Basic IT as well as CV writing, Interview skills, team leading and other employment training stuff. I also have a second job at the off-licence over the road (20% discount on beer! YAY!). I have been married for 5 years in August, and have a 3 year old son, with another on the way. Got into WOTW when I was in my teens - it used to give me nightmares when I was a kid and my dad played it! I am an avid Arsenal fan (hence the sig) and also a member of a footy forum ( forum.football365.com if you are interested) on which 10% pf the threads are about football, and the rest of them are about sex, porn or illegal downloads! ;D Pleased to meet you all (again, for some of you!)

Hello all, I'm Marc, and I've been a member here for a couple of years now, although certainly not active that entire time. I plead 'busy life'. ;D My first exposure to WotW was to the original book when I was about five or six. My father, knowing my love of science fiction, introduced me to WotW, First Men in the Moon, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and a few of the other classics. It was WotW that captured my attention the most, although I've gone back and read the others multiple times as well. Over the years, I've re-read the original book multiple times, own and listen to the 1939 radio broadcast, and have seen the various movies. Strange as it may seem on this forum, I've never been exposed to more than some of the art of the Jeff Wayne version. No predjudice to you JW fans, I've just never been into musicals of any sort. I will definitely go see the movie when it comes out. For the record: Original book: My favorite version. 1939 radio broadcast: Thumbs up. 1953 Pal Movie: Thumbs up. Pendragon Pictures version: Thumbs down, against high hopes prior to release. Paramount/Spielberg/Cruise version: Mixed, but mostly thumbs down. A little more about me: My educational background is in aerospace engineering, and I pulled out of that career path at the end of university when it was blindingly apparent that I wasn't going to be able to get a job in the field for years (this was 1991). I still love airplane design and am finally putting my education to work by designing my own sportplane. You'll find me up on the www.homebuiltairplanes.com forum regularly, under the same 'Topaz' pseudonym, and you can see some in-progress work on my airplane project there. For a living I'm a manager in a graphic arts department for the boardsports clothing manufacturer Quiksilver, at the corporate HQ in Huntington Beach, California. My department builds the catalogs that our sales force uses to sell product to the end-retailers. It's a great place to work - people frequently skateboard between departments down the hallways and every couple of months we have 'beer Friday', where the company caters in beer and pizza for the lot of us. We're right by the beach, so a lot of people go surfing at lunch if the waves are right. Yeah, I love my job. ;D Beyond aviation, my other hobbies include off-road driving and camping (Toyota Tacoma V6 4x4), sportbikes (CBR600F3), shooting (1953 Russian SKS and Ruger P95DC) and good single malts (I won't pick a favorite! I won't, I won't, I won't!). I love to travel, and have been to the UK twice. Beautiful group of countries. I've been on a train through Woking station, but unfortunately didn't have time to stop. Maybe next trip!

Happy to be here! I'm an American by birth of Irish and Huegonot heritage. I bought Jeff Wayne's masterpiece on Vinyl in 1978 I think it was. I was in Junior High and some of the music was getting radio airplay.
MOST CURIOUSLY, it was brought to my attention as a movie trailer at the cinema! Not the CGI version of today but old school and well-done for the time. Back then, before cable TV even, there were no commercials or adverts of this sort shown in the cinema so it was a very rare thing indeed. I was confused and waited YEARS for the film to materialize. (I was only a kid, remember.)
Did anyone else see that? Does anyone know where it's got to after all this time?
Anyway, Glad to be aboard! -Keith ;D

Hello, tippy922. Welcome to the board! I've heard from other Americans that the Jeff Wayne musical promo was shown in cinemas in the states. It was just that, though, a promo film for the album not a trailer for a full blown film adaption. Jeff Wayne is planning a film though, as you may know. If you are a fan of the album, Jeff also now has an official site (which I am involved with as well as working here) you might like to check out if you haven't already. www.thewaroftheworlds.com

Perhaps it's about time I introduced myself. My real name is Barry, I am 31, and I am from Birmingham UK. I am married with a 3 year old daughter and a dog called Baldrick (I was very much into Blackadder when we had him). My first experience with WotW was the Jeff Wayne album. My parents had the vinyl record (which I still have, except I can't play it as I don't have a record player). I loved it at the time, and I loved looking at the pictures in the pull out book while I was listening to it. I also have vague memories of watching the Pal version when I was younger, which I thought was quite good. My recent obsession with WotW has all started from the Spielberg film believe it or not. When I first watched it at the cinema I thought it was good but dissapointing. Then I bought it on dvd, and with the help of imdb posts, I got to understand the film a lot better, and got to loving it- so much so that I have seen it about 15 times already. In that time I managed to rent 'Invasion' which as you all know is the UK title for the Asylum version- I didn't like this as much, but thought it was a good respectable effort (I hate the machine design though). Not long after my new found love for the Spielberg film began, I decided to buy the book and read it for the first time. All I can say is WOW! Looking back at the Spielberg film now, as much as I still love it, I sooo wish it could have emulated the book more than it did. The book for one thing seems so much more epic. The Spielberg film really needs to be longer too, to give it more of an epic feel. There was at least one extra tripod scene filmed, and I think it was purely that they ran out of time to finish the effects that it isn't in the film- but it should be. Of course, after reading the book I have joined with wonderful site and have been kindly welcomed by all of you, thank you. Reading more of the views on the Hines version, I just had to buy it, and won a copy from Ebay along with the US version of the Asylum dvd which is called it's proper title as we all know. Even with the many, many flaws the Hines version has, I still enjoyed watching it, and have ordered the Directors cut. One of my new found hobbies is ripping dvds to PC, then editing them to my own liking. I have already edited out the silly time reversal at the end of Superman The Movie, and I have even done a clip of Spielbergs opening of his film with Jeff Wayne music!! I was quite prepared to edit the Hines version, and may still yet. But I will see what he has done with the Directors cut first. So that brings you all right up to speed with where I am at the time of writing. I am lucky enough to have my computer in my lounge, and have it connected to a normal monitor as well as my plasma tv. I have a home theatre set up, with 5.1 sound. I have Sky+, which is great. I do think disks (dvds, cds) should be on their way out, and everything should be on chips/memory cards by now. I am also into photography, and only yesterday went to Dudley Zoo and Castle with my Canon 20d SLR camera. I also enjoy listening to music on my dap (Samsung YP-Z5). So as you can see, I am not a complete saddo So there you go, that's me. Thanks for welcoming me
