So has anyone here ever been there? I'm in two minds about it really. On the one hand it's odd that its not promoted more. The 25 foot Tripod is impressive enough - the crashed cylinder and germ mosiac less so. But all there is merchandise-wise is a postcard from the tourist information place. The guys in Games Workshop of all places didn't even know what the Tripod was! Worth the trip just to visit Horsell Common - exactly as it was in Wells' day - we even found the sand pits.
On the other hand, i'd rather it not be promoted too much. Would hate to see a HG Wells theme park there - take a look at Robin Hood world or whatever its called to see how crass it can get.

I know, but you'd think with Games Workshop being solely SF and Fantasy at least some of 'em might have an interest.

[glow=red,2,300]Given how well they know their own rules, codexes and miniature ranges there could be a GW H.G.Wells scifi wargame and they still wouldn't know the difference between a Morlock, a Giant Ant and a Martian Fighting Machine! [/glow]

I have a Great Aunt who lives in Woking, so I've been there a few times, although not for some years now. Also, my dad was actually born there.
It always seemed odd, but exciting, to me as a child that somewhere I'd actually been to which seemed so ordinary and mundane was the sight of the Martian invasion in the story.
Also, does anyone else remember in the very late 1980s / early 1990s when there were news reports of a strangely high number of supposed "UFO sightings" over the town?

I've been to Woking! :-) I think it was in 1998 or 1999 (the Martian was already up) and my father and me were on a weeklong holiday to London, just like a year before. Since we've seen the major London landmarks the first time, we had more time to spend on other stuff. So I definetly wanted to go to Woking. Guess how surprised I was to find that freaking statue! It's amazing, with all the little details around it. We also went to Horsell Common (from where I brought back two little rocks which look like they have been broken by the heatray :-) and went on to Maybury Hill. After that, we had supper in the Maybury Inn. The man serving us said he didn't know his inn was mentioned in WOTW, so I showed him in the book I had with me. Later on, in London, I found a copy of the 'critical edition of the War of the Worlds' so, you can guess, that was one great holiday for me!

Guess the local authority thought it would scare the local population sh*tless waking up each morning to see a hood towering above the buildings ;D). Btw, what is the 'critical edition'?? You mean first edition Heinemann, or maybe the magazine instalments???

Yeah, a 100ft statue would be cool, but very difficult to realize, I think. I like the one in Woking though, it is pretty tall.
The critical edition is a book published by Indiana University Press which contains a lot of notes, glossaries, studies of the manuscripts and articles regarding WOTW.

[glow=red,2,300]The sculpture has to last for a long time and be gale-proof so I can see why it couldn't be to scale. [/glow]

[glow=red,2,300]I liked what they did in the graphic novel Scarlet Traces, where the tripod has become a memorial and tourist attraction with little robot tripods running about mini-heatraying pigeons! [/glow]

Since we're on the subject of statues anyway... Bayne, that picture on your site, of the wreat(sp) laying Martian? Is that statue really got to do with WotW or is it just some statue which coincidently resembles the death Martians?

We're planning a visit to Woking in the summer though it will be part of a homage to wells by following in his footsteps and going to all the places mentioned in the book. After that we may well follow his brothers path though that has to be decided.

Amber, when you get to Horsell Common, there is a large sandpit, but it isn't the one mentioned in Wells novel. The original landing-site lies in what now is some woods. I'm sure Rusty or KillRaven can fill in the details.
