I don't know about many of you here on the forums, but I'm a big fan of the quite well known Axis and Allies board game and computer game.
I'm just wondering what you would think if they did a version based on the War of the Worlds? If they did I suppose it would have to be based on the Victorian book timeline as otherwise the human players wouldn't stand a chance of victory.
Of course there would be some major differences, there is a common enemy for all the world but how those nations decide to deal with the invasion could make dramatic differences. The Martians themsleves wouldn't have many units either as in The War Machines, Handling Machines, Flying Machines and the Martians themselves.
As the Martian player, the invader must land his cylinders (1/2 per turn for X amount of turns) and establish control of the area. As more land is conquered, the Martian players gains more resources for his 'pits' (the factories of A&A). This represents the Martians ability to ultilise the Earth's resources which they disire to build more machines. Handling Machines can also give resource bonus's by captured humans. The super weapons of the Martian player can involve things like Machines with shields and the red weed.
The human players must fend of the Invasion and prevent their demise by the Martians. There are two main stategies that can be implemented.
1. Beat them all. tough but actually possible if well planned and get good dice rolls.
2. Out last them. If the human player prevents the Martians capturing every capitol and has X amount of human units remaining after a set amount of turns the Martians will die of disease and perish. (in the last few turns they will suffer modifiers making them dizzy, disorientated etc basically less powerful).
This can actually make the game pretty balanced. The Martians must work hard to stick thier ground in the opening turns to keep land and regroup with later reinforcements and then they must use their units to conquer the whole planet. Not only that, but their units cost more resources and will take longer to build. In the latter stages, infection sets in and they must work hard to overcome it.
Not only do the human players have a hard time using victorian technology against them, but they must avoid extinction and capture. Capture can mean them becoming a resource for the Martian war effort! On top of that, players who are determind to survive might even attack other human players territory to gain the resources to beninfit their own nations chances of survival.
The way this game could be played could be huge! I originally thought of War of the Worlds Risk but I think an Axis and Allies version would work much better. Maybe someone could modify the existing versions rules to accomadate Martians?
