After getting quotes from a number of suppliers, I've managed to organize personal development of the first collectible card and board game. Before you stone me for advertising, lemme explain.
It's a strategic wargame with a heavy steampunk influence called Blood & SteamWork.
Based loosely on the roots of wargaming (H.G.Wells' Little Wars) the board game simplifies and sizes down wargaming into well...a board game simple enough to be played by almost anyone.
If you've played a Collectible Card Game Before, this uses aspects from games of that nature too.
Players play as either Human or Martian and control an arsenal of Victorian Steam Technology or Horrifyingly bloody Martian Machines respectively, building their armies and weapons, moving them across the board, and then fighting using dice.
The board game comes with everything you need to play. Terrain Customizable board, unit pawns and cards, barrack and factory pieces, and event cards. It also will include a free booster pack filled with randomized additional units for battle.
You can expand the board game by purchasing additional booster packs themselves to get such imperial creations as steam-powered men, Invisible soldiers, beast-men, armored Quadricycles, unique alien monstrosities, and more.
The game is still being play-tested and bugs worked out. It's in a very early state, but it is definetly something that is testing well. Fun to play!
No, it's not War of the Worlds as we know it. (It's just very Victorian and Gothic with similar themes) But the game does root itself deep in classic Victorian science fiction, diriving its inspiration from the classic stories we all love.
This little game came about from a minor frustration with wargaming and RPGs that get so involved and complicated (Plus, I really just dig steampunk and there are few games out there that carry the theme). I wanted to aim for an inexpensive way to casually leap into the battlefront for a quick bout with your mates...all the fun of a war game without the expensive miniatures or the kinetic-loss of a video game.
Play a board game sometimes. Monopoly may not be Warcraft, but it is a good way to hang out with your friends and get away from the computer screen.
I'll keep you guys informed...sorry if this is plug-like. Profit is miniscule in my hopes of just getting a good game out there...wherever it may go.
