I recently had to reformat my hard drive on my laptop, and so lost the WOTW game. I have just tried to re-install it, and I get the following message: If I choose "Ignore", nothing happens and if I click on "close", well, it closes! Can anyone help?

What machine are you running with? Have you tried downloading the win2000 patch? It is a very fussy (and buggy) program, it has difficultly with running on anything more advanced than the machines that were around when it came out. I have shared your exasperation many times.

I've just been on a forum for problems like that! And they had a problem with a game and it cam eup with that! It's a problem with that Damn service pack2! All you need to do to fix it is to find the Autoexec.nt file in the Windows\Repair folder and copy it into Windows\System32. You can see the thread here: discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=184526 (look out for me! ;D). --- --- But sadly I have this problem and I don't have that damn file on my compyter!!!

[glow=purple,2,300]I had this problem for AGES! I found the answer in another thread. Follow this link:[/glow] spacetarget.com/games/pc_war_of_the_worlds.shtml [glow=purple,2,300]You want to find the WOTW.ZIP file for download (it took me a little while to locate it). Once you've downloaded it, open the .zip file and copy the WOTW.EXE file to your hard drive. Then, either double click it, or replace the old .exe file with it. I did this on Sunday, and it now works fine![/glow]

Thanks for that! Got the file and it's working fine now, a lot of messing around, but it's not too bad a game considering it's age! I did like the introduction movie, even if a little grainy. Just as a footnote, I had a little trouble running it in 1024x screen mode, with it crashing out, but after retrying it worked for 3 goes in a row. The patch works fine, once you've copied the file from the Windows/Repair folder.
BTW, if downloading the patch, try the 4th or 5th mirror site (I think), as a lot of the links take you to mobile ringtone sites and stuff and dont have the file at all!

Welcome to the board, JonT. Youy could try this other patch which is a 'fixed' version of the old spacetarget one I believe. www.londonbwts.co.uk/Funnies/stuff/WarOfTheWorldsFixedexe.zipReplace the WoW exe with this like the other one. Here's some info on what that error message means (although it relates to another game it may be useful).. '' When I try to run the game I get a message "DDERR_NOEXCLUSIVEMODE". This message says that your computer can't switch to full-screen to play the game. There is no legitimate reason for this (unless you have another full-screen application running in the background). It is more likely a bug in certain video drivers (in conjunction with DirectX 7.0). Try updating your graphics card driver (check your manufacturer's web site) and/or DirectX version (here). Also, before running the game, shut down any instant messengers, and generally any program that may pop up a window. Check the system tray area (at the bottom right of your screen, next to the clock) and terminate any unnecessary programs.'' Also, as I have stated before, the WotW game is a bit of a drama queen. It, in a nutshell, tries to convince your PC that it doesn't have memory to run it when this is clearly not the case (it is an old game now though!). Before playing, try the following. Reboot your PC. Empty all your caches (an internet eraser program will do this quickly, there are some free ones on download.com). Make sure NO other programs are running. This may well do the trick. Let us know how you get on.

Never heard of that but sounds like the old false memory problem again. Try loading from a new boot and emptying all your caches etc. Make sure no other programs are running and see if it works now.

It could be a registry problem perhaps, but I've looked online and could find nothing to help at all. You might want to try and contact GT but I believe they were swallowed up by Atari a while back. That's all I can suggest, I'm afraid.

The first problem is easy enough to fix and does not require the patch. It is caused by an absence, normally, of the autoexec.nt, config.nt or command.com files. Once these are expanded from your recovery CD or created manually then the problem goes away. There is also an exe (xp_fix.exe) that will fix the problem. It is under the files section when you follow this link. games.groups.yahoo.com/group/jeffwaynes_thewaroftheworlds/It could also be caused if one of these files is corrupt but this is unlikely. Dean
