Let's not forget that Otto was both designed and brought to life by little Charles Gemora, a Filipino stuntman famous through the 30's,40's and 50's for playing non-humans such as Ingagi, and White Pongo.I also believe that he was a friend of Janos Prohaska, who also played the Mugato on the original Star Trek.

If you look closely at the hood of the Spielberg Tripods you'll see they look a bit like Otto's bulky head.

Mine would be to have Rachel, Robbie, and Ray separated (at the battle where Robbie disappears), only not in a ball of flames. The woman attempting to take Rachel is an aid worker.
Then, in Boston, Ray remembers that his ex wife was going to her mothers. He gets there, it's deserted. Cue Ray running around the streets of Boston, desparately searching. He finds his ex's car, smashed and up-ended. He calls out to no avail. (a la Dr Forrester dsparately searching L.A).
He bumps into another, smaller, military convoy, who try to get him on board to evacuate. He tells them no.
Lost, desparate, and alone, with the sound of war machines coming closer, he wanders aimlessly. An aid worker pulls him into an abandoned church, where he is re-united with Rachel.
Later, a party of army medics come in bearing strechers. Ray hears a familiar call. Its Robbie, burned, cut and bruised, yet alive.
Outside, the war machines trumpet as they begin to slash and burn Boston. Suddenly, the sound of feet becomes unsteady, closely followed by an almighty crash. A war machine has fallen.
Despite the best efforts of the aid workers, everyone rushes out.
Cue crawling hand, 'it's dead', etc etc, Morgan Freeman, etc etc.

When the reporter says, "Once the Tripods start to move, no more news comes out of that area."
