You could use a UFO kit to start with, There all over e-bay. or get the 1/72 JW kit I got. its kick ass. I got it from a guy here in the US. I'll send a link when I can find it.

I'm about to build a tripod, and I'm using the Bandai "Dark nebula tripod tank" kit.

Depends on what Kind of look you want for the hull, and legs, but in most cases I'd point you in the general direction of Plastruct... www.plastruct.com/They have a wide varitey of rod and tube, and sheet plastic, and other peices like domes, and towers.

I take it from this that you are going for the 'scratchbuilt' version instead of a readymade in the box kit. If you have an idea of the machines looks then thats a good start. Take a look at what you local hobby/model shop stocks in the way of materials. The hood can be made from resin and here you could make your own mould. The legs could follow suit from resin or have them made from other materuials such as brass or aluminum - or if you have access to a lath, that works a treat. I too have been thinking of scratch building a machine. Model making and some basic scratch building is something I have been doing for over 20 years, mainkly for customers and again mainly ships and ocean liners with the odd sci-fi thrown in. H_C

I hope to be starting on a non-scale Gobble style model soon, so far I've got a bitz list that includes...
1 3" wooden disk - local craft shop 2 2 1/2" domes from plastruct.. 2 6" Model Railroad "coneyors" (they come in 3 packs) Parrot Gun, Deck Plate, Davits and Blocks from BlueJacket Shipfitters.. Wound Guitar String Small plastic ship for hood...
..and an as yet undecided amount of tube and strut to brace the legs with..
I still need to find pincers to use, to match the lllustraions

There are various WOTW related kits out there, prices do vary, and some of the kits do come from the U.S. Scratchbuilding is one option, done a lot of that myself over the years, and I have a couple on the drawing board. The Jeff Wayne model will be out soon. Its already built and ready to display. Made by 'Dark Horse' www.darkhorse.com, it will be a very nice item www.cometminiatures.co.uk will have there Jeff Wayne Fighting Machine and Handling Machine kits out very soon, so I have been informed. Great. I'm just in the process of having a new house built and i will finally have a place to display models and run my trains. A Fighting Machine will be a must in there. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
Cheers

Wow paper fighting machines! COOL! But in the paper model in the pictures of the link on 2nd post the feet are discs, but in the Jeff Wayne CGI movie, the feet are claw-like. Any explanations for the lack of feet similarities? Were there any feet in the original plans?

I found the answer to my own question. In 'The Birds' picture, the Spider machine has discs for feet. Also the dead fallen Fighting Machine has discs for feet.

In the 'Parson Nathaniel' painting, they do't appear to have any feet at all. But with the general style of that painting, I think, disk shaped feet would spoil it. I have the 'New Files' version of the CD and in the booklet there is a concept sketch by Michael Trim (I assume to be used as a guide for all the different artists) of an FM with a side view of the leg next to it. The foot appears to be just a rectangle (it's definately NOT a disc).. but then it could be meant to be a three toed affair, which would make sense of the feet we will get in the movie.

Ive been losing it recently tryin to make some for our project, we had one almost done then realised we couldnt move it to do the stopmotion! If i remember rightly in the jw game the tripods have three toed feet, i guess all the artist just have their own idea. then again the pic of nathaniel looks almost like its on a beach (for some reason) so maybe the feet are under sand?

No they wouldnt be under sand, if you look to the left of the picture, the one furthest away is kinda in mist and or water, either way its clear and you can't see any feet. Also the FM closest to us the leg furthest right, the shadow is going in the wrong direction!

I made one out of some styrofoam balls for the head & body, a toothpick to hold together the head & body, pipe cleaners for the tentacles, and popsicle sticks for the legs.
