I got the chance to see this film for the first time two days ago. I must say that it was not bad as what I had been expecting. After reading so many posts and things on other sites about this film, my expectations were very low.
I'd like to give them credit for being the first film that attempted to be a true to the book adaptation. I know that the special effects were not that great. I could tolerate that for most of the film. The worst effects were probably scenes where characters were on carts or during the Thunderchild scene. The fact that most of the scenes were obviously filmed in front of a blue-screen didn't bother me that much.
I thought the tripods themselves looked pretty cool, aside from the metal tentacles, which to me were kind of odd looking. One disappointment was how little the black smoke was used. I remember it being used much more in the book. I also would have liked to seen a canon-like launcher for it, like in the book, rather than it being sprayed around, like in the film. The design of the heat-ray was also interesting. Not exactly like the book, but I still liked it. At least it wasn't the usual flame-spewing heat-rays usually shown in movies. I also would have liked to see more of a mention of the red weed, rather than it being just a background object. The handling-machines were neat looking, too, except for the metal tentacles like on the tripods. Not much to say about the flying-machine since its appearance in the movie was so short.
I have no real opinion on the acting. It's probably just me, but I seem to have a problem spotting bad acting (or good acting, either).
In conclusion, I actually liked this film (contrary to the opinions of many others on this site and other sites). It may not be cinematic masterpiece, but it's definitely not the worst film ever. I feel that this film is getting way too many negative comments on it, especially on this discussion board. I think that Hines and everyone else at Pendragon gave a credible effort.
Please don't turn this thread into something against my opinion or turn it into some sort of "this film stinks" thread.
