well, Steve and Paul Petrico of FAB leisure are planning to open another sci fi themed bar in Manchester. After eating a fine Italian meal and downing a few J Ds we returned to my house to discuss the project. It was not long before WOTW popped into the conversation and they decided they would like a quick look at it. so in went the DVD and with the aid of a drop of port they watched the whole thing and even with it's obvious faults actually enjoyed it. they now have decided the theme for the club will be Wellsian and victoriana sci fi incorporating the construction of some heavy duty tripods, partial and complete and they are looking to invite some of the actors to guest speak at the opening. Keep you posted

Well it's like this. the bars tend to lean towards the slightly quirky and out of the mainstream rather than the big blockbusters.the bars are frequented by many independent film companies as well as the more established studios. Past guests and speakers include Gerry anderson, Mike Sheared ,just departed, the cast of Red Dwarf, Richard O' Brian etc and to be fair some aspects of the film are not that bad and some are terrible. I think the guy there after is the Ogalvy actor... probably a good orator,,, with a few stories to tell. anyway any opportunity to be commisioned to design and construct bloody big tripods and other Well's related artifacts greatly excites me ...What news today?

Let us know when the Pendragon cast appears tug and we can go round armed with our custard pie guns [ Leftovers from the Bugsy Malone film ] and rotten vegetables. 20 points for a Piana, 15 points for a Goforth and a BIG 100 for Hines!. I'll also see if I can get 'The Phantom Flan Flinger' to come along.
If you can get Cruise to appear then that would be dubbly fantastic. I've got a BIG vat of slime waiting for him!

Oh well, I'll take what's left of him. Won't be much by the sound of it. Maybe his ego will survive though!

I'd hardly call it malicious Leatherhead. Not only has Hines and Spielberg created 2 incredibly mediocre films but they've messed up the chances of Wells fans ever seeing a decent live action version of the book. They deserve nothing but contempt as far as I [ and quite a few other Wells fans ] are concerned.
As I've said before - a crummy kids book - Harry Potter - get's a big budget faithful adaptation and what does Wells masterpiece get - 2 incredibly stupid, cheap and nasty straight to dvd adaptations and one big budget mediocre film that's more about it's mediocre star than anything to do with HG Wells story.
It's a bloody disgrace!

If I was the owners of the bar I wouldn't give them any publicity. They just don't deserve it.

One director had a budget that could clear the 3rd world dept, the other did not.
One made a summer disaster movie for the mass public based upon a 1950s movie. The other tried to adapt a classic book to film for a smaller audiance.
One had a bunch of overpaid egos strutting there stuff.
The other had a group of work a day actors giving it there best shot. This is just personal but I would say that buck for buck Pendragon did better.
SS had no excuses.
Besides this was never intended to turn into an argument, I was just informing the readers of something that might be a bit of fun.

As regulars here will know, I'm one of Timbo's harshest critics.
I also think most of the acting was hopeless.
However, I don't begrudge the actors anything. Face it, they're told by some guy that he'll make them stars, in person Hines probably can talk the talk. It's not their fault he turned out to be a nutter.
I say let them have their day in the spotlight and good luck to them. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm an idle southern git I'd go up to Mancland to see 'em myself.
Hines, on the other hand, can go hang.

Hey, that's telling them! It's refreshing to hear some pro-Pendragon opinions here. You'll find that you're in the minority, but I hope that doesn't keep you from speaking out.
And a belated welcome to the WotW Online forum!

Thanks for the backup Lensman. It's been getting a bit cold out there. If anybody wants to check out my credentials it should hot be to hard I've worked in and around british film and TV for most of my working life and I know how difficult it is to get anything meaningfull or origional commisioned. There was an intent to the WOTW spoof I made a few years back for FAB. and that was the hold that Paramount had over the rights to WOTW. Many british film and TV producers have approached them and spent a lot of money in doing so to convince them to allow the book to be made honestly. To no avail.
I personally wrote a complete set of one of horror programes under the title of terror in the telling. to try and recreate the atmosphere of TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION.
Every one approached at the BBC, GRANADA and others loved it and said they where excited by the project but it would not get made over here because of the drive to make COP, DOC and COPDOC shows and <reallity TV> Even thougth I had made the SFX models scored the music and done all the story boards ... So what can you do. Thats why I have a certain ammount of respect for Hines . He just whent ahead and did it and damm the lot of them.. I wish I had.
IF any one thinks I'm talking rubbish I am happy to send to anyone the projects mentioned. TUG

PS I approach the viewing of the Pendragon movie as Ray Harryhoauson meets the BBC 1970 with a glass of brandy and it works quite well ... sorry about any spelling mistakes but I'm knackered.

That's the thing though - Pendragons film might have been acceptable in the 70's but it isn't now - and WOTW fans were totally misled over it.
