I just picked up the Pendragon release at Walmart this afternoon. The Cost was $8.42, there were only two left after I purchased mine. It was not in the new release section but on the isle where all the other dvds are displayed. I live in Florida so maybe the rest of you can take a look at your local store and find one. This was not even one of the Super Walmarts just a regular one.
I have not viewed the movie yet, so I cannot give a review of it. I hope to get a chance to view it late tonight.

Thats odd, I went onto the Walmart site www.walmart.com and found nothing at all about the Pendragon version, not even in a search, except for the 1953 Paramount release which is listed as under $9

What rating is it?
R? Which would be an 18 over here wouldn't it?

Some 'R' rated movies can become '15' here, Krys. It depends on the content. Usually a lot of bad language and drug use will bump that up to '18'. I'm not expecting either of those so I would go for a '15'.

Well, I got a chance to view the movie late last night and I must say I enjoyed. But it will not be up the the standards of some folks.
It has a runtime of approx. 180 mins., the dvd includes the trailer, movie, picture gallery and Wells bio. (which is just text). I could not find a rating on the cover, but while there is no foul language there are a couple of bloody shots like when a tripod steps on a person. The dvd was released by a company called Stearling Entertainment Group. The movie follows the Wells book almost scene for scene and word for word.
The movie has a sepia tone like an old photo that runs though the whole movie at times the sepia tone is heavier than others. In some scenes it was hard to tell if it was day or night the story teller shows his wife the planet mars in the night sky but it is still daylight maybe is was just a poor twilight special effect.
Speaking special effects, they are not the greatest. They do match the quality of the ones on the Pendragon website and yes they do look like something some one did on a home computer. However at times the cg is better than others it's as if you can tell when people of different skill levels produced different segments of the cg. The shading, detail level and frame rate of the cg leaves a lot to be desired. I was not to happy with the first appearance of the martians from the cylinder and the thunderchild segments.
As for the acting it was good, better than some of the acting I saw in Revenge of the Sith. The one thing that I got tired of was all the walking the story teller does. Down county roads on forrest paths up sand pit hills, on city streets, I believe he passes himself on the road a couple of times because he does so much coming and going. I know he does a lot of traveling in the novel but they go over board with it in the film. If they would cut some of the walking the film would have be shorter and easier to watch.
I will mention one thing about the tripods they move quite fast in some scenes and work well in others. While this movie is to long and the special effects are not good and down right bad in some scenes I am glad to have it. To date it is the only War of the Worlds movie to follow the original novel.

Well, that's it then. Thanks Tony for the review. I'm glad that the first one came from an unbiased source--pro or con. Tony's critique seems pretty clear-eyed.
A suggestion for the mods: Would it be a good idea to start a Pendragon review thread with Tony's even-handed review as the first one? It might set a tone that will encourage a somewhat civil discussion.
--Of course, all of this presumes that this is a legit review. If it isn't, please excuse the egg on my face.

Im already working on it, trying to trace the DVD but so far with no such luck, but its early days yet. I have emailed the company as mentioned in the review - Sterling Entertainment - to see what they can tell me, until then there is really not much more we can do. At the moment, no dissrespect to others, but this at the moment is a isolated case as nothing has come forward yet of the exsistance of this DVD from other sources. Leave it with me and I'll see what I can find. I ask if Tony could find a way of send us some 1/ screen captures from the film (not seen in trailor) and as already suggested the cover (back and front) - if at all possible, thank you in advance.

No disrespect meant at all to Tony but we'd like to see independent confirmation of this before we start a dedicated review thread. There are already a hell of a lot of threads on this flick open so this can stay as is for now. As this section needs special attention, I'm sure you can all understand this. Bear with us.

More to the point ... as we have seen NO Thunderchild depictions on the trailer perhaps Tony could supply a screen shot of the Thunderchild going in to action, as with respect ..most of the review could be written about the trailer

What has probably happened is that the Street Date is supposed to be June 14, but Walmart has already received it waiting to be put out on that date. That particular store's stockboy didn't pay attention and put it out. Considering it's not in the New Release section that seems very probable.
Stores get movies well ahead of their Street Dates and are not supposed to put them on the shelf till that date. As far as walmart, their boxes are labeled in big RED letters the street date.

This movie would be fine for a 13 or older child. A tripod steps on a couple of people in different scenes and leaves a bloody pool and matter on the ground and there are scenes where the heat ray sets people on fire and then they turn into skeletons.
I saw in the credits a listing for tripod puppeteers so there must have been cgi and models both used depending on the scene being shot. But as feared by some on this group the tripods do have the sausage linked tenticles.
I know I have never posted anything to this group I have always just lurked and some people may not believe I have the movie but I would be glad to send a photo of the dvd and dvd case to someone who could post it. Just let me know.

Thanks for the review Tony! Definitely what I was expecting. Did some calling around my area and nobody even has the Pendragon version listed... I darn well hope we get it up here in Canada.
