those tripod legs in the london shot are completly different from the trailer ones . i think that hines is just trying to apease us with a taste of some concept art and the actual triopods will be much scarier than those ones. they have the same clear bubble as the concept art of the handling machine.

Bloody nora those fighting machines are awful. What have they got on their heads? A Sky dish? They like a bit a Jerry Springer in the morning do they? Dont mention budget to me either, good design costs nothing, they look like shoddy metal chickens, awful, just awful. On the subject of the artcle, a sci-fi magazine will write an article about anything sci-fi, its the nature of the beast, beggars can't be choosers, it doesnt mean this film is suddenly going to be any cop. Couldnt they at least have released some new pictures for the article instead of the same old tired pictures we all know and love? The one picture they did release was bloody dire-o-rama. I agree also that its nothing like the trailer tripod, in the trailer the legs where close together and had a rolling motion, unlike the metal chicken things that are crawling all over lego land. It does confirm though that the big ben shot was not pre-vis. dear oh dear oh dear.

Cheers Matt and Anthony for the images.
I have to say I don't like the machines, they look awfull and nothing what is described in the novel and to me the image (sepia toned) looks very slapped together and not a scene from the actual film. The sepia effect gives that away for me, why bother shooting it in colour then have this as speia unless its some sort of news related 'flashback'. The tenticles still look like toilet roll tubes but the Martians do seem to show they have that ability to produced ground breaking advanced technology skills - the machine has a SKY satalite dish fitted. Maybe they can watch the attack themselves on SKY NEWS ;D

Titter...
Why aye Motile, nice to see you, to see you nice!
Well, now I’ve had a better look (and not at one in the morning!), yes, those machines do look awful, all splayed out like a spatchcocked chicken, and nothing like the (impressive IMHO) legs striding purposefully over the artillery in the trailer. As someone else said, for all we know it’s just one manky pic that one of Timbo’s mates has cobbled together to shut everyone up.
And the sepia toning just looks like a way to distract the viewer from poor CGI – why not go the whole hog and speed the film up, add a load of scratches and say it’s simulating cine film circa 1902? Then maybe a load of pratfalling cops will chase a Martian across the Common in a car that falls apart and custard-pie it into submission.
I take your point about sf mags running anything to do with sf, Motile – but CFQ is one of the more reputable ones (or at least it was when I were a lad), so that may count for something. Mind you, you know what they say, garbage in, garbage out.
Still, it’s some kind of progress.

I agree with you, motile. Those machines are awful. I hope they are not the final design!!! Nothing against a sepia tone if its bought back into colour a little. Not too much effect.
How does the article confirm the BB seen was not pre-vis? Sorry if Ive missed the obvious. Just finished nights and ready for bed.

I would presume as it doesnt say this new picture is a pre vis or concept shot that its from the final footage, if that is true (I dont know if it is, just my opinion) then the buildings are the same crap CG as big ben, that leads me to the preliminary conclusion that he BB shot was not pre vis.
I dont know about anyone else but that shot looks like the concept art from 2002 where the space needle is destroyed in Seattle (I mean in setting = two mad chicken like machines causing havoc).
I think the captain nemo cockpits look rubbish too by the way.

I like them if I'm honest, I can see why people don't though they arn't really what the book discribes but I think that Hines and the design team have created a fairly scary tripod image. The grainy effect is due to the way that magazines are printed, it's called a half tone and when it is scanned and enlarged you begin to see the dots of ink that make up the print. I think that detracts from the look of the image. Personally I like the idea of using Sepia but thats because I love films that do crazy visual things. Again, i appreciate that isn't to everyones tastes.

You never know, seeing them moving might make a difference.

That true. Movement will make them look massive and hopefully terrifying

That's a unique design. Thanks Matt & Anthony for posting it. Hard to tell in this shot, but I agree. The FM legs in the trailer don't seem to match. --Unless they're squatting down on their haunches for the photo? Is there a scale issue? The machine to the right, it's leg near BB is behind a house in the distance. Is that right? How tall would that make it?

Oh Gods I hope this is not the finished design. Where's "Crawling about under a dish cover"?- unless you cound the sink plungers/sat dishes on top of their heads? It looks like the legs could fit with the trailer- we can only really see the top of them here. Not the domed hood that the book would suggest. So- the heatray- looks like a camera? Not according to Tim Hines- who's researched the book SO painstakingly. Unless he read War of the Worlds & the Daleks instead. Where's the basket on the machine's back?Obviously Tim's copy of WOTW is missing the chapter "In The Storm".* Let this just be a red herring or teaser- OHPLEEEEEEEASSE! * Yep- this is an unforgiving rant full of bile. I'm having a bad month and don't see why anyone else should get off lightly. Just enjoy this and hope I don't start reading you some of my poetry! Normal service will resume shortly. I hope!

I just noticed, there's a circular opening at the bottom of the "cockpit." It looks like the chickens have a constantly surprised look on their face. lol.

Generally I'm a man of few words on the forum, and when I do its generally a load of gobbleygoop. However, regarding "that" picture, It took me ages to work out exactly what it was. I hope to god that these are not the finished fighting machines. It must just be a scrapbook image. And now I am confused about the sepia imageing. I know what sepia is. Hey! I used it once myself at a party. What happened was that I had my video camera, and my mate was pretending to play the piano and also lip synch to "Bring Me Sunshine", by Morecame and Wise, and filming it in sepia gave it that great seaside comedy look. Seriously, you would have to watch it to see how great it looks. We were quite drunk as we had been drinking lager and Brasso. "Tangent" ?

Nothing, I repeat- NOTHING makes this picture right. It looks like its been put together with prittstick, bloody awful. Come on it's not that bad. I really think they are going for an art house look rather than the tripods looking real time. If anyones seen the incredibles they do the same thing, snippets in black and white. I just wanna see the film now, see how it all fits together.

Oh dear. Difficult to work out the physics. If you stare at it long enough you lose all depth perception. I just realised that those were the legs. What a giggle. Can't wait to see this now.
