*laughs - Hines' Martians sounds like a kind of canned food*
Erm, where was I...
I've not caught anything on this subject, but are the Martians from the Hines project going to be entirely CGI, or perhaps animatronic (like Farscape's Pilot) or maybe even Stop Motion (very old fashioned, but used in The Life Aquatic to a very high standard).
The horror element is going to have to be strongly emphasised I think, and you just can't get that from oure CG which never remotely looks real to me even in it's most high budget forms...

I know there is an old concept shot of a nasty looking green potato thing passing by the window (not sure what the hell it is to be honest), but where we are now, who the hell knows! I get the ipmression that the Spielberg Martians are going to be essentially upright, vaguely humanoid creations - not scary enough I'd say!

yes, Berk is the only one with enough fear factor to play the ultra creepy aliens. Maybe Boney will be a tripod, just his head with 3 legs coming out if, walking around going "i dont think thats a good diea Berk" or maybe the martians would be like drut >_>

I suspect the Martians themselves will be mostly CGI, with some practical models built for interaction shots with the actors. Tentacles and such, for instance.
It's a bit cheaper that way, for the effect desired. Building entirely animatronic Martians (per Wells' description) would probably be hugely expensive, if they're to be sufficiently realistic.

Adult speaking now! Quiet children.
The fighting machine is going to be both CGI and puppetry. Apparently its a ten foot model operated by a team of puppeteers.
Theres not much info on the creatures themselves but judging by the early release for the modern version hines will probably make them through animatronics too.

Let's not forget this is not a new production, but a re-start of an old one. There's that one shot which has been posted where we see a Martian thru a window. If Pendragon already paid to build a puppet, animatronic or otherwise, it's quite possible they'll use that in the new production. Likewise, I think it entirely possible the Tripods might greatly resemble those in that awful color pre-production painting showing Tripods destroying the Seattle tower. Altho the painting was terrible, the Tripod design was not. I *was* hoping they'd dump that green lighting, but it seems clear from recent photos that they have not. Ah well, I can still rejoice that this will have a period setting, and judging from the live-action stills, the live-action part will adhere closely to the book.

Ah well, I can still rejoice that this will have a period setting, and judging from the live-action stills, the live-action part will adhere closely to the book. I recall reading somewhere (wish I could remember where) that the pre-production illustrations from the 2001 effort are no longer representative of the current designs, and that they only portray the 'mood' of the current production. There are some noticeable differences between the legs of the FMs in the painting and the legs of the machine shown in the trailer, for example. However, ultimately I've got to agree with your final sentiment, and we'll see how they turn out on film!

Yes, I'd tend to agree with all that, just hope I get to see the damn things!
Another thing I was thinking about is the feeding method - whether it is going to be a mechanical or more organic procedure. I think if you are going to have a comely wench in screaming mode (and in bondage at that), then she has to be menaced by the creature itself, rather than a handling machine or specialised feeding machine.

There are some noticeable differences between the legs of the FMs in the painting and the legs of the machine shown in the trailer, for example. Yes, I thought they looked different too. But then, I swear the first time I looked at the trailer the legs had honkin' huge feet exactly like the Imperial Walkers from "The Empire Strikes Back", yet the hi-res stills posted from that scene now have different looking feet. Do you spoze they're still working on that sequence, too?? Jeez I hate to sound like one of the anti-Hines faction, but I'm beginning to wonder if they have *any* FX sequences finished on this film! Calm down, Lensman. "Sky Captain" was delayed because it took longer than anticipated to complete the FX, and turned out to be a wonderful film. Perhaps that will be true for Pendragon's WotW also. Unfortunately, if this film is delayed until after the Spielberg production is released, it will be *very* bad for Hines' box office take. And yeah, I'm repeating myself.

Personally I was horribly disappointed by 'Sky Captain'. I thought the CG graphics were blurry (presumably to save money by rendering at low resolution), the actors were horribly mis-cast, and the plot was full of more holes than I could count.
It seems like kind of glaring problems with a movie when the back-story is more interesting than the plot, the best acting comes from a dead guy and the last line is the best part of the film. If they'd done the Jude Law/Angelina Jolie plot it might actually have been worth watching.
