Wow, Gray, this post of yours should be bronzed! Yes, I find it rather mind-boggling that such a large percentage of the posts here in this forum are so negative. I for one am looking forward to Pendragon's movie with great anticipation. A period production of WotW has been #1 on my movie "want" list for decades! (Yes, I am that old.) I don't expect every single detail of the movie will be exactly like the book. Frankly, only the most fanatic fan would want it to be. Me, I'd rather be surprised! Movies which adhere too closely to a book are bland, like the first 2 Harry Potter movies. I'd rather have an auteur willing to develop the material more creatively, like Peter Jackson did with Lord of the Rings. So long as Hines is true to the *spirit* of Wells' work, I'll be happy. I still hope to see the film open in a large number of theatres on March 30. But if it's delayed, I'm not gonna start whining about how Hines has "betrayed" us. This film does not belong to us -- it belongs to him. No matter how long we have to wait, Pendragon's WotW will be the most authentic version I'll see in *my* lifetime, of that I am sure. Good luck to you Mr. Hines, some here are still rooting for you! Jolly well put, old chap!

I don't recall ever hearing Bille Piper sing - but friends of mine who do say it wasnt too great... But I have heard that she is a good actress and has received some very good criticism of her acting in tv over the past few years such as in a version of 'The Canterbury Tales' (I think) and also in a thing called 'Bella And The Boys' too. "I still hope to see the film open in a large number of theatres on March 30. " Then you really are unaware of the the realities of the film business...like most fans are. There is no freaking way on Earth the film is going to open wide on March 30th.There is not enough time to set up distriubtion. <snip> "But if it's delayed, I'm not gonna start whining about how Hines has "betrayed" us. " Sorry, but I don't like being lied to. And Hines is lying about the film being out on March 30th. Just ask anybody in the film business. No, there is not enuff time AT THIS POINT to set up distribution. You are *assuming* distribution has not yet been set up, because we can't find any indication of it. That may be correct, but it is not *proof*. As scientists say, "Absence of proof is not proof of absence". Hines is lying? What nonsense. He may have run into trouble, health or production or whatever, and he may have been overly optimistic, but there's a BIG DIFFERENCE between being mistaken and lying. For instance, you are mistaken about some of the things you have posted. That doesn't mean you're lying. If Hines misses his deadline, he will lose some credibility. He knows that. He would never have publicly announced a release date unless he had a reasonable expectation he could meet it. Failing to do so will only make future difficulties for him; it certainly won't help him in any way. Those who accuse Hines of lying -- and you're not the only one in this forum who has -- are taking this all *much* too personally. This not *our* project, it's *his* project. If the film is delayed, it will *not* be because Hines had some devious evil plot to defraud us fans -- it will be because of business difficulties. So take a deep breath, step back, and remember -- this is ONLY A MOVIE. Whether it's the greatest film ever made or the worst piece of dreck ever won't stop Wells' novel from being one of the greatest science fiction stories ever written.

I also find it very inappropriate to lambast Hines and the actors (in the Production Diaries) for hyping the film, as many posts in this forum have done. Okay, so very probably Pendragon's WotW is not gonna be the greatest film ever made. But it's standard for film makers and actors to talk as though every film they're promoting is just that. Is Hines "lying" because he's hyping the film? If so, then 95% or more of film makers and actors are liars. Hyping a film is a standard part of promotion.
Surely most people participating in this forum are aware of this, even if their knowledge of film making is limited. So why is Hines getting so much flak here for promoting his film in the usual manner? I think it's further indication some in this forum seem to believe this is *their* film, when in fact it the film belongs to Hines and Pendragon.
Being fans of WotW does not give us ownership of the film. So chill out! We're spectators, not participants.

Whilst Mr Hines is undoubtably aiming this film primarily at the fans of HG's work and is watching the fan reactions to his every move, Lensman has made some very good points. We really need to put all this into perspective. It's just not worth getting so hot under the collar about.

Topaz/Lensman - that could be part of the problem ..I keep coming onto this topic hoping there is a thread containing new material/news .... but we keep mulling over old ground , dissecting to nothing things we have already pulled apart,
Until something new comes out, i cannot say wether or not this present situation is gonna change too much

Not so much as off topic as you may think, but . . . .
A while ago a friend of mine slated left, right and center the film 'SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW', and it was all based around the trailor he had seen on Film 2004. I bought the film yesterday, I really did enjoy it and tonight I received a text from him saying that he thought the film was superb. . . Funny how opinions change when in 'full' possesion of the facts.

They look just like something out of Lion comic or the more obvious Flash Gordon type serials. There's also supposed to be 1 or 2 W.O.T.Worlds references in there.

A while ago a friend of mine slated left, right and center the film 'SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW', "Sky Captain" is my favorite film of last year! Totally kewl retro-SF. I'm not sure what "slated left, right and center" means... is that a Brit expression? But I guess you mean he panned it before seeing it. I saw a lot of negative online comments about the "Sky Captain" trailer, saying it was cheezy and lame and even complaining it was "out of focus"... clearly from folks who had no exposure to the type of films "Sky Captain" was referencing and imitating. I don't find that all that surprising, frankly. I think most people who post heavily to online forums are teenagers or young adults. When they get older they don't tend to get so wrapped up in things which in the long run aren't that important... like one single movie which hasn't even been released yet. But then there are old geezers like me who have never grown up...

Yes, the sound of the Martians' ray weapons from the George Pal movie is in there... I'm can't think of another WotW reference at the moment, but the movie is stuffed full of references to many, many SF and fantasy films, especially the Flash Gordon serials, Buck Rogers comics, and "King Kong." Also lots of SF pulp covers.
