I'm having trouble imagining a CGI 'person'. All I get in my mind when I try to see a CGI of a real person is some cartoon character from 'The Incredibles' or 'Toy Story' or the like. Unfortunately, that won't be acceptable for this project. I think creating CGI FM's, HM's and Flying Machines is the easier part. Show me a realistic CGI 'human' and i'll be mightly impressed. Are there any examples out there from this or other films?

[glow=purple,2,300]The humans in Final Phantasy: Spirits within weren't too bad. And the trailer for Polar Express, with the little kid in bed and the rumbling room, looked quite good, and I thought if WOTW would be like that then I'd be happy!!
Also, although not exactly humans - the Orcs/Elves created by WETAs Massive program, and Gollum give me great hope for the future of CGI people. With another 2¾ years to go, I expect Jeff will make full use of developing technology to create a realistic atmosfear.[/glow]

Yes that is challenging! But they WILL definatly pull it off!
And they also need to do realistic animals, dogs, birds, horses etc...
Water effects, and weather...
Foliage, trees etc...
Heat ray effects, metal buckling, people burning etc...
And the martians themselves, if we see them for more than 2 seconds...

In the animatrix there's a cg movie that looks gorgeous. The cg people almost look real. Of course that's the Japanese. The Matrix obviously has a big Japanese influence with all that anime and cg work. But Weta's Gollum was shockingly realistic! So the white guys do have a big shot. ;D

Isn't there a couple scenes in the new Star Wars movie that they filled in CGI actors in a fight scene?

Yeah, the models were pretty good, as were some of the scenes where they got the movement right. Unfortunately a lot of the time it came out looking like a bad 'Poser' video (for those who don't know what I mean, Poser is a low-end character animation program that's notorious for its rather cheap look).
IMHO the big problems with CGI humans (except as background actors you don't see much) is getting them to move properly and getting their skin to look right. Poser, and many PC games, makes everyone look like a plastic doll, but a fair amount of research has been done on realistic skin modelling now. The main problem is that skin is partially transparent, so you need to model the light coming through it as well as light being reflected.
Even so, as long as it's as good as what I've seen of the new 'Captain Scarlet' show, it would be watchable. Given the difference in budgets, I'd hope it would be significantly better.

Poser is mainly used by kids and lonely men to create CGI porn pictures... check renderosity.com

Of course, lots of the battles and so on in the Spider Man movies were CGI.. as was The Hulk. Has anyone in the UK been watching 'New Captain Scarlet' on Saturday mornings. The rendering is pretty good on that. Each character has even been given their own individual skin blemishes and so on.

I've heard Lucas might be bringing out a super duper special edition before long. I wonder if he'll redo some of the stormtroopers [ with their dated looking footwear ] in the original trilogy to the same standard of the prequels. He seems to be slowly re-doing almost everything by the looks of the latest dvd.

The rendering is pretty good on that. Each character has even been given their own individual skin blemishes and so on. I gave up watching the new CAPTAIN SCARLET after the 2nd episode. The actual show itself is very good and the animation is also very good, but they've shoved it in an annoying kids programme slot and the presentation of it is appalling. I missed the end of the first episode as it was split in to 2 parts but I thought it had finished. I've read that they're supposed to be giving it a later time slot for the older fans though. I'm sure the budget is around the same as Jeff Waynes film [ around 23 million pounds, 48 million dollars ] so hopefully Waynes film should look even better.

Yes I agree the splitting up of 'Scarlet' is annoying. Be nice if they do reschedule it.
