I've been taking a look back at some of my WOTW art over the years...starting in 2000 when I first read the book...up until recently. It's been a while and my ideas keep changing for better and worse...I've come to think the Correa designs are the most faithful to the book's description, as Wells did favor them when they came out. Hence, I imitate it alot. So here's a brief look back at my scattered work over these years.
My first settled design of a fighting machine. Spider-like legs are a bit much.
Dabbling with the Handling Machine. The legs do seem a bit funky.
Harvesting Machine...of my own invention. More awkward spider legs.
Flying Machine. It's actually quite the opposite of the book's description...not very wide or flat at all.
Digging Mechanism. Funky legs.
Martians. The ears (should be ear rather) are (is) wrong. I'm liking the organic pippette tentacle nail though.
Redesigned Fighting Machine. This time the legs seem too stiff to me.
Redesigned Handling Machine. Very neo-Victorian.
Redesigned Harvesting Machine. Legs work a bit better being more animalistic me thinks.
Redesigned Martians. This was essentially a movie-idea version...so I wanted them to be very grotesque and horrific. More beaks, asymmetrical design and fleshy tumors. I like the idea of the tentacles being long fingers with fingernails at the end.
The game and website that stirred a bit of controversy with the Jeff Wayne title. Whoops. Luckily the nice folks over at Waynes straightened it out with me painlessly. I never regained the motivation to continue making the game, but it's still a pretty sweet idea.
WOTW stamps for an art project I did. I also redesigned the Fighting Machine again, making the hood wider and the legs more segmented...kinda cool.
Backburner idea: Adopt your own Martian.
The Battlefield mod that never took off:
War of the Worlds Refugee sees new light! Though the game concept turned from an RPG into an action shooter. Nothing much has come out of this besides the basic control scheme...moving, shooting, running on foot.
And of course my unveiling of my concepts for that WOTW Halflife 2 mod I was doing artwork for...which seems to currently be dead. Pity too, they got some publicity in a game magazine.
...Of course I have TONS more sketches and designs that I could dig through. Lots of interpretations of the machines. Never really have done a final completed composition of any, but the concepts still exist.
