Well Starfleet isn't created until the 22nd Century, and that Galaxy class doesn't appear until the 24th Century. So i think the Royal Navy beats them to it...not to mention the original Iron Clad was a Royal Navy ship

It's not a Galaxy Class, the aspect ratio on the saucer section is wrong, (longer than it's wide) and the "neck" is cut down a lot...
Besides, at least someone -built- something, as opposed to grabbing a stock pic from a RN website and saying "ThunderChild" in their regardless of weather the RN -has- a ship of that name...

My mistake it's a 'Holden Class' vessel, looks a mix between the Galaxy & Ambassador classes. Well to be honest i don't have time to play around with model ships. If SS were to include a Warship it would be very similar to the one i showed. Who cares if i got it from a website? Considering the film is fiction i don't think it's relevant whether there is an actual Royal Navy ship of that name, that particular Destroyer class exists and it grounded a little more in reality than some Starfleet vessel.

Despite being a little embarrased to admit I know this.........actually 'USS Thunderchild' has already appeared on screen. It featured at the beginning of 'First Contact'; and was amongst the fleet that attacked the Borg cube. It was an Akira class vessel and rather different looking than the model featured in the link above. Here's a pic, though one can't make out the name: www.m-nomura.com/st/images/thunderchild.jpg

Oh yeah i remember now! I seem to remember the Steamrunner class from First Contact too, and the Norway Class.
I've got Starfleet Command 3 somewhere, haven't played it in ages.

Yeah, but the starfleet vessle at least has -something- to do with a fan tribute to WOTW...
I guess I just fail to see how yelling "HMS THUNDERCHILD" and slapping some pic up that you spent -zero- effort on, and may or may not be the kind of ship the RN or SS names Thunder Child (going from the naming convention of the other ships in the class, I -seriously- doubt it, which as I said before, leaves Starfleet ahead of the RN, in naming a vessel in tribute), is some how "better" than someone's modeling effort, esp in the Fan Creations section...
I mean, other than showing off your addiction to modern military harware, what does it add?

I may not have 'contributed' anything worthwile to WOTW but that's because i don't have time playing around with model ships or whatever, i have better things to do. I guess what i meant by 'even better' was for the film. Since in context you're going to see a ship like the Type 42 Destroyer in action against the Invaders, rather than some Starfleet vessel with phasers and torpedoes. To be fair you have included excellent artwork and i did applaud you for it. For me i DONT have time at the moment, i have presentations, essays and tests to do in uni before i can think about 'creating' anything myself. Therefore the only thing i can do is show pics of existing ships. I'd love to be able to capture a photo of a Type 42 Destroyer on the high seas and say it's mine, but i'm not going to find one am i Maybe when my uni work is done i can think about creating something myself. This is a Type 45 Destroyer that will come into service in the future. I like the futuristic look of it.

Yeah sorry Horsell lol It's just i'd love to see a 'Thunderchild' ship in the form of a Destroyer like the Type 42s/45s/Arleigh Burke. At least the pictures are not too big this time!

Not that SS's film is the definitive edition of WOTW anyway, the 53 didn't have any naval action, and considerting the locations the SS fiilm has been shot in, you're more likely to see the Coast Guard, rather than the navy in action against the invaders. Every diffrent period and setting will have it's own "ThunderChild" but that debate is probably better suited to other places.... So, here's my final word... For a modern day, US set version of WOTW, there is no ship I'd better love to see take a heroic if doomed stance than the following... Besides, in the 24rd century, that destroyer would be a museam peice, right along side a flintlock musket... And now, off to do "better" things... whatever that means...

I was speaking since about the SS film, since it is the latest major WOTW interpretation. Naturally when it comes to talking about WOTW i will revert to the SS, especially since it is a modern version. I hope to see Starfleet fighting the Invaders in the 24th not the 23rd century, i wouldn't fancy Kirk's chances Well i didn't say the SS version is the definitive version, it's just the latest version that happens to have a modern setting. The George Pal version deviated in many ways from the formula of the book. I can see why you chose the Coast Guard Cutter, since it could nothing other than ram a Tripod, which pays homage to the book i'm guessing. Although i thought the point of having the Iron Clad was it being the latest in technology in at the time the book was written? I would opt more for a Destroyer/Battleship/Carrier. Still the Ice Cutter's can carry a nice helicopter that has true offensive capabilities... The MH-68A Stingray en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agusta_A109Woudln't last long against a Tripod but nevermind lol. Tom Cruise's character Ray in the SS film works in the docks, would be nice to have some kind of ship at port while the invasion is underway, perhaps it could come to the assistance of the doomed Ferry. Woudln't be different than if you were in the 28th century, i'm sure the Holden Class would be an antique too. It's better to leave this now, you stick with your models i'll have my photos. Keep up the good artwork, look forward to seeing more. I'm sure it'll come to you eventually

In reply to to Iron Mans post regarding a Coast Guard cutter in the role of the "Thunder Child"... I imagine the movie's heros to embark a ferry on the New Jersey side of New York Harbor to cross over into safety at Brooklyn, Manhatten, or Staten Island. I bring up this point as my old friend works as a Captain for the ferry company(out of New London CT.) He told me that the film company used one of the company's ferrys for the "fleeing the tripods" scene. I'm unaware if the plot line follows Mr. Wells book or if Mr. Spielberg has the tripods sink the ferry or perhaps it escapes to safety. If the "Thunder Child" scene is in the movie, in New York Harbor, it would make more sense that a CG cutter would be present. There was a large CG base at Governor's Island off the tip of Manhatten until 1998. The photo of the cutter shown on this forum was one of four of this type stationed at Governor's Island. And after Sept 11 a large cutter(as well as smaller ones from Staten Island) patrol the Harbor 24/7. Also there are numerous heavly armed patrol craft that round out the defensive perimiture. There is no US Navy base in New York Harbor , although Naval warships have suplimented the CG presence from time to time. Getting back to the photo of the CG cutter...The cutter is the USCGC MIDGETT WHEC-726. The is 378 feet long, gas turbine and has a top speed of 30+ knots. It's main armament is a 76mm/62 caliber gun and a Phalanx close in weapons system. Until 1994 the ships carried 6 harpoon missile launchers and 2 sets of torpedo tubes. In addition they were/are armed with two 20mm chain guns. The radar/communication/ gun fire system is the same as the Navy's Oliver Hazad Perry class. And the ship can embark either the Navy's ASW helicopters or the current CG helos.(of which have been armed since Sept. 11) If this type of ship was employed in the movie it could do as well as any similar sized Naval ship against the Tripods. Oh, these cutters were designed to operate as part of a ASW group, they are incapable of being an "Ice ship"(USCG Ice breakers are unarmed) In closing I haven't read that the USCG has been asked to provide any support for the movie. But if you viewed the movie "The Perfect Storm" the Coast Guard cutter "Tamaroa" was all Computer Generated and looked pretty good. Any way my two cents worth...I look foward to the movie. As I can't figure how to use spell check on this system any resemblence to the actual spelling and my spelling is purly co-incidental.... MJM USCG(Ret)

Hey Bosun pleasure to meet you!
I never knew that Cutter had a 76mm Cannon Harpoon Missiles, Phalanx AA Cannons, Chain Guns among other assorted weaponry.
I looked up the Cutter and the only form of weaponry it stated was the attack helicopters it could carry, and also an armed boarding party.
Obviously with the weapons you pointed out it could pack quite a punch!
However the reason i stated that they should use a bigger and more powerful ship such as a Destroyer/Battleship/Aircraft Carrier is that at the time of Wells writing the book. The 'Thunderchild' represented the latest in technology in which to fight the Martians with.
I just thought that the most powerful ship at the disposal of today's Military would mirror that.

None of the above... I choose the CG, because Search and Rescue is one of their primary jobs, along general homeland defense, the CG very much is the parrallel of the Channel Fleet, that and I like the clean colors, It's the perfect ship to selflessly throw itself to the defense of civilan shipping...
And I don't ascribe to the "Iron Clad as the latest technology" read either, Ironclad rams had been around for about 40 years and were borderline obselete, the Dreadnaught was on the horizon... The scene works for it's drama, and the heroism of the crew, Thunder Child works in part because it's the advance ship, no thte flagship, it's small enough to get in to the bay, and be initally unthreatning to the tripods, but big enough to reasonably take a couple down before sinking.. . A larger ship, and the martians might not have persued, a smaller one, and the martians would have obliterated them... So a ship just large enough to be dramatic was used, to show herosim, still existid, after the near complete -rout- of all the other forces that had faced the martians...

I never knew it had such armaments as the other guy described.
Since it would be more likely to have CG around as you said and considering their role then yes they could fit well into the film.
Be interesting if SS has included any Cutters i the film.
