Hi all- what do you think of this (I got that phrase from a flasher!! ;D) Done entirely in Bryce 2, a few years ago- modelled painstakingly using primitives/boolean modelling only. More pics will follow...

F*ck! You did that in Bryce??? Awesome!!! Since Bryce excelles in landscape, and not that much in objects...
Now you only need to put in Nathaniel holding up his holy cross :-)

Cheers Gnorm!
Yes- quite an effort in dear old Bryce- the object count in just 1 tripod seriously slowed the old mac down (a Performa- 200MHz 603e)- the final texture on the hulls wasn't what I intended- looks a little plasticky in some lights (like in this pic)- sadly I don't have the original scene files to rework it now- am slowly learning Cinema 4D and Maya to do a better job.
Nathaniel- Yes, should photoshop him in really...

I'd love to get the hang of 3D modelling. I've got a first gen iMac, so no dice, I guess. I came across Pov-ray, and allthough it's very neat and controllable, has got a steep learning curve, and doesn't realy allow for free forms.

A first gen Imac is fine- most of the big packages for the Mac were developed over a number of years- Cinema 4D especially. This one is not overly difficult to learn, either and comes in a variety of levels from Go- the basic with no particles or animation (under £200) trough to XL Studio - megabucks, with modules for hair, advanced animation, more complex particles and dynamics.
Also, if you're thinking of a new computer, the Mac Mini is ideal- not too costly (you can get a package for about £500 with a flat screen monitor) and enough power to run the up to date versions of Cinema 4D, Maya, SoftImage etc- many of these now have 'budget' or learning editions...

At the moment I don't have the money to buy a new Mac, but I will keep an eye on their new models. If I get to it, I want to create small scenes, maybe like little dioramas. I then want to use those to illustrate a fantasy/drama story I am planning on writing.

Brilliant, absolutely briiliant. As mentioned, we just need an insane Curate in the foreground! I wouldn't have the foggiest how even begin to go about doing something like this and am totally awestruck by people like yourself who can..... Do you do this professionally? If not, why not?

Crikey, thanks folks.
Not for a job- i wish! Bit of a hobby for me- I haven't really undertaken anything else this elaborate since, but did several scenes using the same models.
Sometimes, when having limitations- for instance the modelling in Bryce- primitives only, it is a great exercise for getting the best out of these limits- makes one think quite hard and laterally. I'm still learning new software with infinite capabilities.
It's the old classic scenario- I'll learn more by having a goal and working out how to achieve it, not from "What can Maya do?" or "What is my computer capable of?"
Sadly, I'll also learn by actually A) Having more time B) Applying myself and most importantly, C) Not spending any spare time I have on Tiger Woods 2004 on my X-Box!!! ;D

A demented Parson wouldn't go a miss in there, stark rollock naked, thumbs in ears, fingers spread, poking tongue out with a speech bubble that says 'ha, I new your mother when see was a snow blower'

Great stuff. Gives me inspiration for my interpretation of the Martian Fighting Machine I am doing using 3DS Max. Unfortunately mine will be vastly inferior, but hey good work! ;D

Works great as a desktop theme.
Maybe a good idea to make WOTW wallpapers
PS, i am using the picture as a desktop and the machines still leave me in awe, just like the first time i seen the album artwork from the musical.
i don,t know how you did it, but it is just so amazing.
One thing though, where are the feet??
