I been asked to write a radio drama based on the novel for a radio station in Bath. Sounds like a fun project. I'm goinf to keep it as faithful to the book as I can, only one trouble.
The Ullah sound effects. I would hate to be ripping of Jeff Wayne in anyway, and I'm not a sound expert, so any suggestions? Please no whilsting or hootings, I want to be as loyal as possible.
That said, the whistling in th BBC 1967 version was pretty scary.

You could do the 'Ulla' but not make it so musical.. if you see what I mean. I would imagine it would need to sound emotionless and alien, just like the Martians themselves, perhaps distorted in some way via some technical wizardry to make it sound even more alien (can you tell how little I know about sound engineering and the like? As long as you don't have it done like I heard it in an audio book a long time ago.. sort of like Boris Karloff in a cavernous public lavatory trying, half heartedly, to sound like a ghost. That sounded very naff.

I was looking at a monotone cry for the effect. More ghostly and otherworldly. Something that would bring you the chills if you were to find yourself in Dead London.
I'l send you an MP3 of my version, see what you can do with it if you like ^_^

It need to be more Aloo than Ulla...
I sudgest you make it deep, with a high pitched hiss in the beckground like the explusion of air.
Make it sound somewhat like the sound of the Watcher in the Water in The Fellowship of the Ring, except with that hissing in the background, like two parts of the same sound, combining it make it sound almost like a scream.
Manacing, shaky aswell, as if the vocal cords of the martians cant breath properly while doing it, raspy towards the end.

The BBC did a versionm in '67 for the radio. It was a modern day setting really dark, but still faithful, even if the Narrator was a pompous know it all git
