Yes, but dated. It is quite racist in parts. But still well worth reading.

I've not read the book yet, but that is probably because at the time Wells wrote it some of the things that we now find unacceptable and racist in society were still considered acceptable.

Isn't the title When the Sleeper Wakes ?? Can't agree with DarkElastic. Found it very boring, hard to get thru, and forgettable. Mercifully I've forgotten almost the entire thing in the decades since I read it.

The main charcter feels that black people coming into the future England should not be allowed because they're evil. That's what I can remember. There might be more to it, but it has been a while since my copy was lost.

It is an old novel Lensman, so to some is very hard English to follow. And you being American, and the book not being set in America about American people, will have added to your disinterest of the story. :-)

Have to say I'm with Lensman on this one.
However, IIRC, I think the point about 'the blacks' was that in order to quell the brewing isurrection, Ostrog (or whoever) was planning to unleash his special police - black police from South Africa, who were said to be especially brutal.

Shakespeare is hard for me to follow, but not Victorian era writing. I fell in love with Sherlock Holmes at an early age. I also enjoy Jane Austen, who wrote in the earlier Regency era.

Smiley or not.

I don't like Americans or America - it's the toilet of the world. And I am glad you are taking offence. Saying that, I suppose a small minority of you are OK!!!
I am just practising my freedom of speech.

I don't see why you are classing America and all the people in it like that... You are entitled to your oppinions, but please remember that each person is an induvidual so shouldn't be stereotyped. The country that one is from should not be used against them in that way.

Just a little bit EvilNerfherder. This site has become boring recently, needs spicing up. It was great when the 3 films were in production.

I am just practising my freedom of speech. Wells rebuked the perceived racist undertones in some of his early works – even if he was only expressing commonly held notions of the time. The question is, are you capable of such honest self examination and intellectual evolution, or are you content to be perceived as a hyperbole prone intellectual Neanderthal?

I'm proud to be an American. And you are welcome to feel however you like. However, i believe thosekinds of comments should be kept to ones self on this forum. I think all here will agree. However, sir, you may want to refrain from classing groups of people together like that and then insulting the whole bunch. To be frank it's rude. if you feel you myst rant about international politics we have a place for that on this forum. See: Wells and Politics. I thank you for your future politeness.
