[glow=red,2,300]Hi, I thought it might be an idea to discuss what everyone thinks of other films of Wells work. I just bought a copy of Universals B&W The Invisible Man rereleased as part of the Van Hellsing Junket (though I haven't watched it yet). I also have seen Empire Of The Ants which has very, very little to do with the story upon which it is allegedly 'based'. I used to have a copy of Food Of The Gods too..... but it has yet to be returned to me by someone I lent it to and I'm loosing hope of getting it back. [/glow]

"Things to Come" was great...if a little preachy in places. But that was our Wells...always propagandizing.
"Island of the Lost Souls" wasn't bad, though it missed the Wellsian boat, too.
"The First Men in the Moon" was a bad piece of cinema, but I liked it a lot.
I'd like to see a film of "In the Days of the Comet." Merchant-Ivory should do "Mr. Britling Sees it Through."

I still haven't seen the last version they did of "Island of Doctor Moreau" (David Thewlis and Val Kilmer I believe). I think it was quite badly panned on release... Has anyone else here seen it, and if so is it a) worth watching at all and b) is it any better than the previous version?? Ta

Crap!...Yep that simple four letter word sums up the dross that movie is. If yer wanna good laugh then the sight of Marlon Brando playing the part of a beached whale is a hoot...Aside from that it's trash. D.F.

Oh dear, David has reached "Bottom!"
Hey, doesn't Eddie look a little 'extra-terrestrial' to you?

[glow=red,2,300]I do quite like the Michael York version. I am yet to see the Kilmer one, though Sill has. I once caught by accident an episode of Sliders, which by that point I had got entirely sick of, which caught my attention. The episode was a total rip-off of the Michael York version of the island of Dr Moreau.... with special guest star....
Michael York! Playing the role of the good Dr this time! I was expecting some sort of 'we've entered an alternate dimension where a fictional book in our world is real' thing but I noticed none. [/glow]

As much as I love "Bottom," I actually prefer "The Young Ones." The old band house looked so much like their place(s), it was scary. Really scary. "Let's like never wash our clothes again." - Neil "What do you mean, 'again!?'" - Mike Ever heard Neil's "Hole in my Shoe" single? Hysterical. Me cultured? Well, I do love Derek and Clive. How cultured does that make me? Gotta be worth several points reduction. ;D

Derek and Clive who??? They were filthy alter egos of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.. if you haven't seen 'Derek and Clive Get the Horn' do so now.Available on DVD in a store near you! 'Are we rolling?' 'Are we rolling??..you c*nt!'
As for Wells adaptions I liked 'The History of Mr Polly'.. not SciFi but a good funny little film starring John Mills and made in the late 40's I think. James Whales' 'Invisible Man' was one of my favourite Wells films. Full of black humour.. excellent.

"I am aware of their existence..." "They're your best friends they are. They come round your house and eat all your Pringles" ;D "You know that Thora Hird...? You love her..." Newman & Baddiel were fantastic... I actually saw David Baddeil at Southampton Guildhall back in '96..f***ing funny!! Derek & Clive Get The Horn is one of the funniest things I have ever seen - Moore & Cook were comedy geniuses ("Genii"? )... Getting back onto the topic, I saw Things To Come when I was about 12 and haven't seen it since, so my opinion is that of an unculture pre-teen boy... I enjoyed it, but thought it was tacky (I was used to colour films and better special effects!!). It was my dad who told me that it was good and he recorded it one night for me. Wouldn't mind seeing it again, now I have a bit more culture!! (Although that's a matter for debate!!). As I have said in previous threads, I haven't seen WOTW since I was (a lot) younger, but other than that, I haven't seen any others. By the way, there's another cult classic on TV this week - The Day Of The Triffids, with Howard Keel...CLASSIC!!

She's the best looker you've ever had...! But she's going to dump you, 'cos you're too old" ;D ...Trifs? arguably not as classic as the BBC series...but no doubt I'll end up watching it...
