As much as everybody keeps tossing up pictures of guided missle cruisers, and battleships and other big iron, has anyone give a thought to perhaps a more lowly, but nevertheless handsome and proud vessel to slip into the Thunderchild's Role? It's certanly on that might be more availble to be thown into a depprate flight, and certianly one that would be sheparding a desprete civilian convoy, across the waters... A Coast Guard Cutter... www.uscg.mil/datasheet/378whec.htm

The Thunder Child did represent the last hope of mankind. The British Navy up to WW2 was the most pwerful fighting force in the world. Showing one of the navies flagships going down was of saying...
NOTHING MAN COULD THROW AT THEM WOULD SUCEED!!!
The SS thunderchild may not be a boat of naykind.

Problem is, that the thunderchild -wasn't- a flagship, or the last hope, (As much as Jeff Wayne makes it out to be) it was what was there, at that moment, it was the advance ship of the channel fleet (who perhaps couldn't go that far inshore) and it's stand in defense of the fleeing populace, is no less heroic, for not being a ship of the line...
As the narrator's brother was sailing off, the entire channel fleet was moving to engage the Martians and was lost n the confusion of battle, it seems likly they were wiped out by the Flying Machine's spread of Black Smoke, but we don't know...

It's interesting reading this topic and seeing how different people view or have viewed the Thunderchild chapter. I always took the Thunderchild as being the epitome of what is good about humankind. It is almost a counterpoint to what we have seen before with people trampling over one another and mugging other people. The crew of the Thunderchild effectively go on a suicide mission and rather than fleeing with the rest of the vessels they buy enough time for everyone else to get away. It is outgunned and outnumbered but it will not give up.
