I was listening to my WOTW CD through headphones yesterday and while listening to Brave New World, I heard an odd sound when David Essex gets to the part "We'll start all over agaaaaaain!" in the middle of the song, just after the verse that begins with "Look - Man is born in freedom, but he soon becomes a slave". When he reaches the high note in "again" it sounds like he coughs as if he'd choked a little or maybe someone sneezes or something. I dunno what it is but it's an odd sound.
I've never heard it on the original vinyl version that i used to own, but it's definately there on my CD. Does anyone know what it is? Glitch in the recording, something the CD picks up that the vinyl didn't, dodgy cd, or something else?

I had a listen on headphones too because I couldn't hear it on my boombox.. Anyway, ~I think I know what you're talking about.. I think that's a guitar noise or something.

I have to agree with EvilNerfherder - it's probably some kind of instrumental sound effect.

It's a sort of muted 'Chack-chow'. Sounded like guitar to me. I expect there's a more technical term for it.

nah it's definately not a guitar sound. I used to be a member of a progressive rock band when I was at uni, and I've never heard a guitar make a sound like that no matter what effects it has on it.
On my CD the verse goes:
Look- man is born in freedom but he soon becomes a slave In cages of convention from the cradle to the grave The weak fall by the wayside but the stong will be saved In a brave new world (guitar) With just a handful of men (guitar) We'll start all over agaii!*ahem*!nnn (guitar)
And then directly after it there's an odd muffled sound from the right hand speaker that sounds a lot like someone coughing. It's very distant though as if the person moved away from the mic.
Unfortunately because of copyright laws I'm unable to make a recording of the verse to let you know exactly what I'm hearing.
Who knows maybe I've got a defective CD or it was taken from a different master, but the sound definately appears not to fit there.

I just played that part, but didn't catch it. Doesn't mean it isn't there though... could be my ears, which - as most of my senses - are quite defective...

I'm beginning to think that maybe I've got version that's taken from a different master or something. My friend has WOTW on cassette and the sound isn't on there.

I've spotted it! But you quoted the wrong part???
Just think of all the poverty, the hatred and the lies And imagine the the destruction of all that you despise Slowly from the ashes the phoenix will arise In a brave new world With just a handful of men We'll start all over a-COUGH-gain

Let me check
*checks playing CD now ;D*
ohh... It happens twice on mine once at the verse I originally mentioned and again at that other verse.
So that means it's either some sort of odd sound effect or they reused the earlier bit where he sings "brave new world" and cleverly edited it into the recording thinking that nobody would hear whatever that odd sound is.
It's not unheard of for singers to reuse a recording in a song like this especially if they're hitting a high note. Peter Gabriel did the same thing on the song Steam. When he get's to the part "Get a life with the dreamer's dream" the "life" bit is really high, so on the studio version he sings it only once and then it's reused throughout the song.
So, anyone got any idea what this strange sound is?

I have just played back the part and I CANNOT hear the sounds you hear. I listened to vinyl, tape, and 3 CD versions including the 'new' mix and its not there.
You may have a faulty batch of disc's

It's on my CD as well. It sounds like some sort of transfer glitch to me. It does sound like a cough or something but if that was the case I'm sure it would have been edited out.

It's not unheard of for mistakes to get left on albums. On one of Led Zepplins albums there is a track where you can hear a digital watch alarm beeping.
However I'm not sure about this being an actual cough. It's not on all versions of the CD that's for sure, or at least it doesn't appear to be. And you can't hear it on vinyl or cassette either.

This is odd. Some of us can hear it while others can't. Some have it it certain recordings where others don't.

Just because you hear it, doesn't mean it's there (sic)

I wonder if I should post this in the "ask Jeff" section of the official album website? I dare say he'd be able to tell us exactly what it is.
Anyone else think it's a good idea?
