I was listenig to JW WOTW yesterday and it struck me how utterly stupid the Artilleryman's plan was to create a 'Brave New World' underground. I mean, I know he was going a bit mad bcause of what happened, but still.
It actually gets me quite irate as is ideas are so dumb, i mean, how is he gonna light and heat the sewers? Is there enough space downthere? Are there enough people that are gonna be bothered to start it?
But maybe that was the idea, that the tragedy that had befallen mankind was so great that it would lead men to think these crazy ideas?

Its enough to drive anyone insane, hanging about Wimbledon Common and having 'The Wombles' as friends.

'Overground, underground, Wombling free, digging a tunnel, the Artillaryman and me. Trying to escape from the invaders up top. A world under the ground may just be a flop'

It is a pretty impossible idea, but he needed something to hope in.
I don't think the illustration in the record was quite what he had in mind though...

I don't think the illustration in the record was quite what he had in mind though... I think it probably was. He's clearly got much grander ideas than reality could perhaps permit and I think the painting depicts his deluded idea of the 'Brave New World' nicely. He was a man clutching a few bent straws. But it was the way he coped. He's clearly not firing on all cylinders, but his unlikely dream gave him hope to survive. Later, the Narrator doesn't even have that. He was all set to offer himself as dinner to the nearest hungry Martian.

The Artilleryman is such a fantastic character though, because he probably embodies the attitude of the entire army, and it's such a difference to the logic of the Journalist. Notice that the other characters have names. The Artilleryman and the Journalist show the two main views that would've been taken up - thoughtless optimism and logical rationalisation. I do English literature, I HAVE to read into these things. Plus, I'm forced to listen to 'Brave New World' in the car rather a lot. My Mother thinks David Essex is The Messiah.

I thoguht I was! ;D ;D ;D But even if he and anyone else did build a new England underground, wouldn't the martians (if not died) find it eventualy? When no humans are around, they can get out fo their machines and roam freely, or make smalled machines in which to move nearer to ground level. They would have found an entrance/exit and followed it, reveling signs of inteligent life, so they bring in heat rays and find more, tasty... mouth-watering, jucy... humans.............

My thoughts precisely! "They were draining the fresh, living blood of men and women, and injecting it into their own veins. BLEEEUUUURRRGGHGHGGG!!!" Or something like that.

Hehe, nice attempt at making that Martian blood drinking noise!
At least the Artilleryman had some sort of hope (if deluded!). He's a soldier, a man of action, he's not going to sit about and wait for the Martians to find him.
He'd probably find a couple of decent sewers, stock them with supplies, and either sink or swim from there. Maybe he'd find more people sympathetic to his cause, or maybe an angry mob would kill him and steal his stuff.

The artilleryman is my favourite character (hence the name) but i do agree he was a bit mad, but he wasnt making too grand plans, the picture is depicting the contrary, i mean, he doesnt really mean to make a hole/tunnel as tall as a fighting machine and really long, or does he? His remark about playing cricket really confuses me, I mean, he said we'd live in drains and subway tunnels. But how could you play cricket and stuff a captured fighting machine in? But you gotta pity him, i mean if i saw "hundreds dead maybe thousands!" i'd snap. My conclusion : he's losing it, but doesnt know it.

His dreams were grand and totally unrealistic and are, I think, perfectly depicted in the 'Brave New World' painting. He was talking about building shops, houses and the like.. some kind of underground Utopia. The old world but underground. In reality, humans living underground wasn't. under the circumstances, such a bad plan but would probably really come down to a few scruffy people scavenging around in the rubble of what was left and making some kind of miserable existence underground. He wasn't so much mad as a little over zealous, and hadn't thought it through properly. Perhaps they could have settled underground but cricket was probably out.

I think his over planning was probably because he had been drinking too much "Nothing but champagne now i'm the boss!" Its a theory, a very unlikely theory but it could be possible.
