Something I feel is a highlight of the musical is Herbie Flower's bass playing. The beautiful melodies in the opening track compliment the guitar lines perfectly, and the riff at the beginning of 'Horsell Common' is probably one of the most recognizable pieces on the entire album. It's a shame there is hardly any mention of the brilliant rhythm section that held this masterpiece together...

Hello Dagon, and welcome to these boards.
I'm not a master of names and such, but does this Herbie Flower also provides the guitar melody right after the Artilleyman says "And me. Got to report to headquartes. If anything is left of it." It is heard later in that track also, and in other parts of the album.
That's one awesome bit of music.

Thanks Gnorn. That's actually Chris Spedding, who I believe played most of the lead guitar on the album. And you're right, that is one hell of a guitar riff! If you're interested, Herbie Flowers was one of the most sought after session musicians throughout the 1970s, and is most notable for his work with Bowie.

If your interested, Herbie Flower was the bassist for 'Sky', drummer Barry Morgan still is a session musician (played with bands like C.C.S. & Elton John) & Ray Cooper is just an eccentric percussionist whos played with millions of artists, O.K.? lots of love Stulllaaa
