I have given Rob to post some information and stills from the "rare" 1978 "Promotional" film of Jeff's album. You can view it by going to the Home Page. Scroll down using the left hand side list until you reach the Jeff Wayne section and you will see it listed as 1978 Promo. Thats the "Home Page " and NOT the forum page - Enjoy. www.waroftheworldsonline.comor a direct link www.waroftheworldsonline.com/screen/jeffwayne1978.htm H_C

Thanks for doing this H_C and Rob,
In a manner the quality of the images actually makes them look particularly apocalyptic. Love to see the whole thing though. Maybe next year?

[glow=red,2,300]WOW!
I sure hope the whole thing ends up online or as a DVD extra!
Very powerful imagery! If this gives us a hint of the style that the CGI film may take it'll be very potent indeed.

Horsell, why was the design of the Fighting Machine changed in the promo?

The only thing that comes to mind is that maybe the "promo" machine was the original look before it was handed over to the artists who produced the artwork, mainly Michael Trim as he designed the machine. . . This is just a wild stab in the dark (as Edmond Black Adder once said to a Witch, but with a "which is what your going to get" at the end of it) ;D

[glow=red,2,300]Hmm.. interesting question. I wonder who made the film precisely?
I hope we might get to see early design picks in the doco in the boxed set, I'd love to see the evolution to the final design! In fact, I want to know as much about the making of the Musical as possible! [/glow]

I remember seeing in Music Week (late 70's) a full page ad by some film company (sorry can't remember which one) announcing they would be making the musical version into a film. Anyone know why it wasn't made?

Could be someone trying to cash in on the albums sales, happens all the time. Though we have had to wait over 25 years for it, there will be a movie version of the album in cinamas in 2007.

Was this 'promo' the basis for the "Eve of the War" (chances of anything coming from mars..) music video clip that was seen on TV shows in the late 70s and has popped up on music channels oldies type shows more recently..I recall it having some simple animated sequences...was based around the 45 single version of the track.

I can't seem to find this clip on the Home page. I saw it once in the theater in 1978 and have dreamed since of seeing it again. Has it been removed from the site?

It has been removed for the time being due to legal reasons.

Bummer..... thanks for the word, though. I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed that it will surface for public consumption eventually....

[glow=Purple,2,300]H_C, Something's been bugging me for ages about the promo, so can you confirm it.
Is there a shot near the start where an urchin girl runs into shot rolling a hoop with a stick, then looks up in horror. Then it cuts back to the hoop clattering on the cobbles.
I vividly remember this clip, and for years have been convinced it was part of the promo, but there's no mention of her in your promo outline. I almost bought the promo video on eBay a few months ago, but it went for over £60, which was a tad expensive for 5 minutes of film!![/glow]

I cant think what clip you have seen with that little girl as the 78 promo or the 89 Ben Liebrand remix video does not feature this at all.

[glow=purple,2,300]Aaaarrrggh!! You were supposed to say "Yep. You're right. She's in at the start, and you're memory is perfectly accurate in this regard".
I suppose my mum was watching The Ghosts Of Motley Hall, or Oliver Twist or something, and the show reached the halfway point with the urchin in it, and the the promo was the first thing in the ad break. Being young and foolish, I may have linked them together.
Oh woe and misery. Forget me own name next!! Wait a minute... there's a bit of a draft round my ankles.. Yikes! Where's me trousers!! Oh, the embarrassment! ;D
Thanks anyway, H_C.[/glow]

What legal reasons? Or can't you say them?
What is this promo? A tele type advert or something?

I can't go into details about the legal issues Krys666.
The 'promo' was made in early 1978 by Columbia Records (U.S.A) and was used as a sales gimmick for the album.
