Yes, I've got the Chris Thompson version too! I got it from my parents when I was about 12 years old and I wondered who was singing on this version. The name of the singer was nowhere to be found on the single/cover. I decided that it was Chris because of the sound his voice. So it is confirmed then. ;D
The Chris Thompson version was also aired on the Dutch radio on the top 2000 of all time.
Greetings, Johan

Interesting. I thought Chris only sang on "Thunderchild", Justin Hayward singing on Eve of the War...

The lyrics are the same as the Hayward version. It is very cool to hear Chris sing the lyrics. But to be honest, I like the Hayward version more...
Greetings, Johan
PS the Dutch cover of this version is the painting with Horsell Common and the cylinder by Peter Goodfellow.

I always wondered who was singing on the other version I'd heard. I didn't realise it was Chris Thompson. No contest really. The album version wins hands down.

Blimey, this is an old thread . . . . .
As good as Justins performance is, I do think Chris's version packs a lot more punch.

I was going through all the threads last night ;D I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the two versions of this song. My actual honest opinion on the Thompson version is a bit stronger than "not as good". I wasn't aware until I read it on this thread who the vocals were by on this version but when I first heard the version, particularly as it was supposedly from the album and not a cover, I must admit I thought "Why?". It really didn't add anything to the album version in my opinion and was actually missing a lot from the album version. Sorry, just my opinion. Chris is more than OK on "Thunderchild", infact it's one of my favourite songs from the album and one of the stand-out performances on the tour (actually I think all the performances are excellent with one exception) but "Thunderchild" has Chris Thompson written all over it in a way I don't see the feeling and tempo of "TEOTW" has.

Chris's version is just a alternate version that was released at the time.

Talking of alternate versions . . .
If Jeff had decided to use influencies other than keeping the album very British, turning towards his original american routes, plus, while watching the re-run again earlier of the documentary about the Orson Welles 1938 broadcast, I do think that Orson Welles would have been an ideal narrator for the album. His voice (like that of Burtons) is very well known and has that air of (for the better word) menace.

Coming back to the Chris Thompson version. This particualr version was released in 1979 but it mainly went unoticed making it somewhat of a rarity.
