Woking is the Home of the world famous Chobham Armour and the biggest tank factory in the world that manufactures armour for both the British and American battletanks. If the martians invaded as they were back then they would have picked the most stupid place to land....

Armour and tanks are worthless hunks of metal without the trained crews, logistics and command structure behind them, so it wouldn't make much of a difference if they landed in Woking today - all they'd face would be factory workers and over-sized tin cans plus whatever localised forces they could get in place.
