has anybody read that new war of the worlds book? sorry i can't remember the author, but it is set in modern times in the USA of course, but there is a twist. the martians are completely infested with bacteria, it is part of their natural biology. thus humans must destroy them with antibiotics.
the book is actually pretty lame but worth a mention i guess, i checked it out of the dallas library last summer

I haven't heard of this. Sounds a bit iffy though!

Yeah... do you mean 'War of the Worlds: New Millenium'? My friend gave me a copy a little while ago because she found the Martian's allergy to penacillin in this book, particularly that in mouldy bread, amusing - as I am allergic to penacillin and a few days before had ranted on at her because she had left some mouldy bread in the kitchen... Quite a cheap shot on her part there... but it did gave me something to read on the 12-hour plane journey back to the UK. It was pretty good when looked at as a general sci-fi book. As a War of the Worlds adaptation, however, it was disappointing. The martian's machines seemed to be described as being more similar to the swan machines in the Pal movie than actual tripods. The story also seemed to end rather abruptly when the Martians were brought down by out-if-date food projectiles... the martians are killed in a lame way again.

Actually - it sounds a bit funny. Giving the Martians anti-biotics to make their headaches even worse.

SPOILER WARNING: I tried reading it. It started out pretty neat. The invasion isn't really so much a surprise in this and Earth actually has time to prepare...in fact that is what i think is the books downfall: it takes more than 3/4 of the story for the Martians to even arrive. Their actual arrival was pretty awesome as the cylinders are MASSIVE and their crash landing is a devastating attack in itself , however as Luperis stated they have little tiny swan looking fighting machines...coulda been done better.

yeah. the tripods are actually supported by beams of light. yuck. but their initial attack was defestating, the EMP blast vaporized the space station. and i gotta give the guy who wrote it credit for turning it around, the martians are allergic to not bacteria but the CURE for bacteria... but still, not really an inspiring book. the only close encounter with the tripods takes place in a mold infested bakery.
