Been trying to get hold of it, but local library and bookshop haven't heard of it. Is it worth the effort?

I've heard that it doesn't follow the spirit of the first book so I have avoided it. However.. if you haven't read'The Space Machine' by Christopher Priest, I would recommend it. It follows events from a different perspective and there are some interesting cameos. Also, you get a glimpse at life on Mars before the invasion. It's a good read.

I've done some searching in my local liberary for 'The Space Machine' the Dutch title is 'Terug naar de Toekomst', in English this means 'Back to the Future'. Sounds familiar?
But it's availible and I'm going to get it when I've got the time.

I have read 'The Second War of the Worlds', having picked it up in a secondhand bookshop years ago for mere pennies. It's nothing special, don't bother going out of your way to find it.
'The Space Machine' is good (and a welcome lightening of tone for Priest), written more in the style of the (stereo)typical young Victorian gent, i.e. he starts out a bit of an uptight prig, rather than Wells' more detached, semi-scientific Narrator. That is worth having a read of.
