Does anyone remember a radio version of The War of the Worlds? It came out in the sixties I think..... It was well made..... Straight from the book though updated. I remember that a jet fighter managed to take out one of the fighting machines but everything else was pretty much straight adaptation from the book with additional dialogue of course. It relied on sound effects and straight narration. I enjoyed it immensely and found it very effective. I can't remember anything else about it such as cast, writer or director. Although the narrator could have been Denholm Elliot - sounded like him as best I can remember. I would say that it was far superior to the Orson Welles version - for one thing it was longer..... A six part serial. Ring any bells? Zoe

I have heard that there was a 6 part UK radio version in around 1967 but I can't find any details, online at least.. Being as I was born that year I could be excused for not remembering it I suppose. Anyone know anything?

Anyone know anything? I have emailed the BBC and will see what happens..... If I hear nothing I'll try writing. The BBC did a number of these around the same time. There was also a version of Jules Verne's 'A Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. Apparently, The War of the Worlds BBC version is available for purchase - at least according to calspace.ucsd.edu/marsnow/library/myths_and_science_fiction/myths4-early_twentieth_century.htmlbut the link does not give much information. It IS rather excellent. I guess since it's BBC that those of us in the UK can freely trade it, as we already paid for it via the license fee, as for overseas persons I don't have a clue.
