Im interested to know of other 'Wellsian' type authors that take your interest.
John Wyndham was another of my favourites. His bookThe Day Of The Triffids was my personal favourite with many styles similar to HG.
The Howard Keel film I thought was very poor, but I did like the late 70s BBC version of the book, and one I was hoping the BBC would release on DVD.

I read Triffids again last month- it really is a fantastic book. The BBC series is another that scared me as a child and I bought 60's editions of that and WOTW at the same time for 10p each at a church fair (in my early teens). I'd like to see this on DVD also.
There are so many elements of Triffids that parallel directly with WOTW- the key element of this being that the triffid infestation/mass blindness is a vehicle to explore the ideas of society turned over and reverting to more self reliant survival. There are some great twists too with fantastic characters- Coker being the standout here.

'The Kraken Wakes' is damn good too.
A brilliant riposte to Wells is E.M. Forster's 'The Machine Stops'. Not commonly thought of as a science fiction writer (because he wasn't really) this piece, a short story, is one of the most disturbingly prophetic works I have read.
