It has been rumoured that Speilbergs machines are to make 'calling' sounds in his forth coming film War Of The Worlds. But what would you like to hear the machine call. . . Above are a few.

Ulla sounds like a dance. Some kind of tango.

Can we have both, cos the book does? The Martian seen in the thunderstorm appears to use "Aloo" to communicate to the other. The dying one uses "Ulla" when it is.. well... dying. I guess if I had to choose one (which I did cos I voted ;D ) I'd have to go with "Aloo" because I can imagine it carrying a more spooky note. The JW interpretation of "Ulla" used to scare the bejeebus out of me as a kid.

The Heat Ray is going to be replaced with a feather duster and the tripod seen wearing a pinny.

I voted for "Aloo", as it seems to be an coordination or attack signal that the martians use.

How do you imagine 'Ulla' to be pronounced? Is it 'OO-La' or 'Ulla' to rhyme with 'duller'? This is not a trivial question...... 'Ulla' sounds rather like 'Allah' as Arabs pronounce it, as in 'Allah hu aqbar' - 'Allah is great'. If this Summer we are treated to lots of mechanical monsters striding round chanting what sounds like 'Allah! Allah!' as they burn down skyscrapers someone is going to assume that they are a metaphor for Al Qaeda - just as people said the Martians in the 1953 film symbolised a Russian attack. 'OO-La has no such overtones..... unless it is interpreted as a sly dig at the French Zoe

I think Jeff Wayne got it right in his musical. From what the extras heard its a noise like a giant cricket and not the ulla from the book, but that may have been a sound purely for reference with the real sound being added later.

Maybe in our remix/remake fixated age the Martians should shout.. ''Ulladubulla'.

Apparently Speilberg is a fan of Disneys 'Mary Poppins', so -
'Ullllllsupercalafragalisticexpealadosushlllaaaa' could be on the cards ;D
