Can anyone confirm this please? The bit about mining coms from the sequence in the pit where the martians are seen refining bars of metal, using earth being dug out from around the cylinder.

It would seem, from that chapter, that they were at least 'mining' and then refining aluminum. The implication is that they were using this to augment the pre-fab materials they brought with them in the cylinders, but Wells leaves this completely open.

<<WERE THE MARTIANS MINERS?>>
Thinking about it, the description in the book of the creatures does have a passing resemblance to Auther Scargill ;D

[glow=red,2,300]Is there much aluminium in the soil there? Were the Martians refining the metal or transmuting it? [/glow]

Is there much aluminium in the soil there? Were the Martians refining the metal or transmuting it? "Bauxite ore usually lies near the surface, and most of it is mined by the open-pit method." --World Book, 1961, "Bauxite" I can't find any indication of bauxite mining in England. France, yes. My guess was that they were refining low-grade ore containing alumina (aluminum oxide), not good enuff to be labeled "bauxite" (32 percent alumina or better.) Just my guess, of course.
