I have the same problem. The only way my friend got it to work on XP was to install windows 98se on his computer, then upgrade to XP through '98 to XP upgrade'. It's not a full version of XP and runs in DOS unlike the full and proper version. I think that's why the game doesn't run as it uses DOS whereas XP uses either a different system or uses it differently. (Anyone who know better feel free to enlighten us!). Best thing to do is buy a cheap computer with Windows 98 and use it soley for WOTW! Sounds silly, but it only needs the basic stuff for it to play brilliantly. With a second hand monitor, keyboard, someone in the know and a few second hand parts etc you could easily knock up a good enough computer for less than £100! I heard a rumour that the game will be re-issued along with the musical this year, if that is true it will almost certainly be able to be played on XP/OS.

I had the same problem and was very dissapointed too. But I searched around and found a simple way to fix it. The only thing that won't work is the cd music. But, you can export the CD's music files into windows media player and run them while playing, OR, you can listen to Wellsradio and jam to the entire ULLAdubULLA remix album and all the pc game music. www.live365.com/stations/320339"the solution as quoted from a help site: 1) spacetarget.com/games/pc_war_of_the_worlds.shtml 2) m1011.gamecopyworld.com/gcw/games/pc_war_of_the_worlds.html surprise, surprise they are the same site you do not need to follow all the instructions simply download the zip file containing the patch to your desk top double clicking on the zip file will run the game, but you can copy it to the folder containing the original exe and overwrite it if you want autoplay to work rename the exe to WOWStart.exe you may need to run the game in Windows 98/Me compatibility mode the screen and game music work fine but if you want to listen to the cd tracks you can only do it through Windows Media Player not from the game menu PS You may want to back up the original WOW.exe and WOWStart.exe before you start!!!!" Here's a link to the help forum if you have any more problems: www.ntcompatible.com/thread25988-1.html

Thank you very much! and for anyone out there who likes to have a bit of fun,, type ICOMEBACK to complete all research type YOULIKEIT to have 100% efficiency or in the actual battle map, type PUNYHUMANS to kill all human units, or ATCHOOO to kill all martian units, hehehehe Only do this after completing the game properly though. That way you can have the satisfaction of doing it right, then truely kicking the enemys backside! Woo!

It played fine Using XP on my computer without any problem. I noted that on the CD case for the game one of the supported Windows systems was NT. This is the American release. I wonder if the US version runs on XP(which is a beefed up version of NT) but the UK version does not because it was not programmed for NT.

Searching Ebay last week i came across a seller selling a combined patch and scenario editor for War Of The Worlds. It cost about a fiver and comes on a cd-r. It copies the games cds to disc and allows you to not only run the game flawlessly on XP but also lets you make up your own scenarios. Oh and it also comes complete with an electronic copy of the book.
